ATbKtrtlO CITY, July JR. The many
jmbers of the theatr'cM profession sum.
motihg; here ore hrwlwr a lot of fun talk
Jnc OTer happy days pnt In this city years
&-. Many of the present-day stars In
musical comedies and nearly alt of the pres
ent Xraudevllle stars were once 'Variety"
actors, that term Including In byeone days
Tery man or woman who did a. specialty
of any kind, dancing;, singing, acrobatic at
monologue. Quito a bunch of tho people
here at present played In this town a score
or more years Ago and tiiey tell It now with
Eleq that all they received for their weekly
wage, If they were a team, was' "twenty
flve-and-cakes," tho twenty-flve meaning
th& number of dollars paid to them and
the "cakes" their board and lodging. At
the variety theatres, In the old excursion
house district, men and women now quite
prominent played as high ni six hours a
day for that amount of compensation and
wero glad to have the opportunity of spend
ing the summer months playing nt Doyle's,
Ouvernator's and the Fortescue Theatre.
The uplift of tho standard In tho vaude
ville business Is proved by ho raise In sal
aries alnco the days of variety. People who
played for the small figures quoted now
receive from one to five hundred dollars a
week, for virtually tho samo stylo of work
as thjy formerly did, and yet with alt this
prosperity they are proud of tho days of
struggle and sit around now and talk of
the fun they had In thoso times.
Not quite 20 years ago George M. Cohan,
who was then a member of the Four Co
hans, was married In this city. Tho Cohan
quartet was then made up of Jerry and Mrs.
Cohan, tho parents; Georgle, who had not
started waving the American nag, and
Joale, who was happily married to Fred
Klblo for a docado and whose death In
New Tork this week cast a pall over the
entire profession.
The first Eastern production of "Tho
Jlaklng Over of Mrs. Matt," a comedy by
James Forbes, was given this week at tho
New Nixon Theatre, with Miss 'May Rob
son as the star. Miss Kobson has been
meeting with success In this piny In tho
wilds of the West and In a few large cities
on the Pacific coast, and she mado no error
in giving it a showing here, even If she
did not make much money. The play made
& dlstlnctlvo laughing hit here nnd would
have struck the bull's-eyo on the target of
publlo opinion had tho supporting company
been a little stronger.
The story of the play Is not alarmingly
new. It is the old theme of a successful
business nian being unablo to lift his hard
working wife up In tho social scale. Hap
pily, thero Is no femnle siren to luro the
husband away from tho loving wife, even
though she be n dowdy In appearance nnd
a Airs, Malaprop In speech. The gradunl
changing of the wlfo, played by Miss Rob
sen, so that by a herculean effort she can
wear fashionable clothing, and tho love
making of a spoiled son Is about all the
story In the play, but the many quaint
speeches of Miss Robson ns Mrs. Matt mnko
the comedy a refreshing and welcome novol
ty. Miss Robson has struck a new vein
of comedy In this play fully equal to her
past successes, and It will win for her many
new friends.
Three beautiful stage settings carried by
the company received liberal applauso on
their first showing.
The fight over Sunday amusements has
been town talk all week, but as yet tho
authorities have not made good on their
threats to close up certain of tho amuse
ment places which persisted 1n running on
Sunday when they were told to close. It
Is claimed that theatres and movlng-plc-ture
theatres aro exempt from this law,
and the amusement mon who wore ordered
to close are wondering why. Roth sides
seem, to be playing a waiting game and
Bunday will decide which sldo has the
strongest hand to use when tho show
down comes.
Joseph B. Cohen, manager of the Broad
way Theatre. Philadelphia, has his family
down here for she weeks, but during his
(vacation time ho Is mapping out many big
things for his theatre next season.
Frank U Shaw, well known to all theat
rical men In Philadelphia, Is a frequent
Visitor hero and will take a real vacatlpn
of two weeks somo time In August.
Samuel F. Nlxon-Nlrdllnger. grandson of
a P. Nixon, Is breaking Into the theatrical
rame here by acting as associate manager
of one of tho theatres.
Thomas Dougherty and William Barron,
both of the executive BtafC of tho Broad
Street and Forrest Theatres, Philadelphia,
were among the week's visitors.
deorge W. Monroe Is still here, resting
up after his strenuous road tour with '"The
passing 'Ihow," nnd preparing for his New
Frank W. Darling, an amusement mag
nate, who goes In for big things In the pub
llo pleasing line, will be here the greater
portion of the -summer.
Walter Kelly, "the Virginia Judge," has
been engaged by tho Shuberts for next sea
on. He la summering hero.
CJeorge F, Hall, here with May Robson,

"SHOES! SHOES!
OLD SHOES FOR
NEW!"
Reversing tho Clndrrclln order. Univer
sal City, Cal., was turned topsy-turvy for
a week In tho vain search for a pair of
hIiouh to fit Mary MacLaren. Ordinarily,
this would not have heen a tremendously
dinicult tusk, for Alary hna nlco feet and
tho slzo U only threo nnd a half. But I-oln
Weber wa.i extremely particular about thoso
shoeB, t'jr they wero to bo featured In tho
tltlo role nf a drama. Moreover, thoy
must bo ) Id shoe terribly old in tlio
last stngn. of dilapidation, but sufficiently
strong to hold together during the filming
of "Where Is Jly Daughter?" which will
bo Been at tho Victoria Theatre all next
week.
All kinds, makes and varieties of shoes
were tried, but none of them filled tho re
quirements. Miss Weber finally decided
upon a pair of comparatively respectable
shoes and decided to "ago" them. This proc
ess took a week, an! It Is sufficient to say
that no Miocs over went through tho har
rowing experiences which befell these star
shoes. Kvery ono who could get Into them
took a whack nt wearing them i hard as
possible, nnd they wero worn 21 hours of
tho day through nil kinds of muddy, stony,
sandy, dirty mid difficult roads uiitll they
were In tho condition In which you seo
them In this remarkable photoplay, which
was adapted by I.ols Weber from a maga
zine story which appeared In Collier's.
