POLICE THE PARKS
AND HELP PLAYERS,
SAYS H. JENNINGS
Detectives Should Be in
Stands and Eject Abusive
Fans, Avers Hughey
BOOSTS SOX AND YANKS
Ilugrhoy .Tannings, grizzled by tho sun
ot the diamond nnd tho strain of one
sizzling campaign after nnother, allowed
his frank blua wes to roam nbout the lobby
of the Aldlne, wherein were sprawled, In the
lazy lull after lunch, tho husky sun-burnt
figures of his peppery ball team.
"They're a great bunch of boys," said
Hughey, by way of Introduction.
"The patrons of the game apparently
haven't kept paoe with the gome Itself," ho
Bald, In a kindly tone, more characteristic
of a Harvard professor of English than the
popular conception ot tho solo patentee of
the famous "IS-yah I (three spears of grass)
Attn-boy, Ty I Hit 'or out. Ham 1"
Hughey was answering a question ! n
question as to why magnates In the field ot
organized baseball allowed loud-mouthed,
boisterous fans to Insult ball players by
allowing them to slather their profane com
ments through tho grandstand and two-bit
section without taking ndequato means to
guard IL
Doesn't Object to "Riding"
Not that Hughey objects to having a fan
ride a contract slave. Not at all.
"Stop a fan from yelling and making
noise and you take the color from tho
game," quoth he, his blue eyes twinkling.
"Ofton after the opposing tenm makes a
rally, somebody wilt yell from the stand,
'How do you like that, eh 7 and all I can
do Is to try to oomo back.
"What I object to Is this: A fan will get
up and deliberately shout an Insulting
epithet at a ball player a personal epithet
that hno nothing to do with hli playing
ability or any act of Ills on the ball field.
This can and must bo stopped. Ban John
son probably has done moro to put the
gamo oh the basis whero you can take your
wife, sister or owoctheart to the game
knowing that .oho will bo perfectly safe
there than nnybody else. Tho playora
havo dona their share. But somo of tho
patrons haven't dono their part.
"They uso language, dlroctcd nt tho
plnyors, that Is not fit for any person to
hear."
Whereupon Ulster Hugh Jonnlngs, of De
troit nnd Scrnnton, unfolded his plan by
which bnsaball can be purged of rowdies
In the stand Just as It Is being- cleansed
gradually of rowdy players
"Tho evil could bo checked readily If the
owners wanted to do It. I do not know
tho pay the policemen get who nro stationed
there, but I fcol sure that It would not
cost much moro to havo sovernl plain
clothes men In tho grandstand and bleach
ers." Eject the Rowdies
"Then," continued tho old co-star of
Wllllo Keelcr, Muggsy McOraw and Wllbert
Itobertaon, and tho man who piloted tho
Bengals to thrco pennants, "when n man
raid something objectionable ho would bo
spotted Immediately by tho detective and
escorted to tho street, with a return of his
udmlBslon money. Lot the papers glvo pub
licity to such an ejection, If It should 'bo
put Into effect, and tho fans soon would
como to rcnllzo that thero Is a difference,
between 'riding' a man nnd openly In
suiting him.
"Profane langungo drlvca away women
from tho game, as well as many men. nnd
It would bo to the Interest of tho publlo, ns
well as tho player to have the thing stopped
for once and all,"
Incidentally, Hughey placed tho blamo of
the Tigers' present position on tho
crumbling of the ofronslvo tho famous
ofTonslvo that put tho Ticers In tho same
c ass with tho plcturcsquo Qlants and the
old Cub mnchlno as one of the greatest
road teams In drawing tho fnns to tho
parks. Although the pitching staff ot Jen
ntngs' club was tho thing that worried him
when the season opened, Hughoy oald that
now It was lack of punch with tho war
clubs apd not poor pitching thnt caused tho
Tlgera to fall back Into second division
nftor repeatod recent losses with tho on
ruahlng White Sox nnd the humblo Browns.
Crawford Still There
"Bobby Veach Is due to sweep up beyond
tho .300 mark soon," continued tho diamond-tanned
veteran. "Slumps worry him
more than they should Sam Crawford
through? Not on your life. The old boy
Is good for throe or four years yet and
then some In this way: George Burns Is a
good hitter, but when ho dooan't get a hit
for sovoral days he worries nbout It too,
Just like Veach. Now when this happens
I can put Sam on first, and he's a rattling
good first baseman, and keep Burns on
the bench for a couple of days. It so hap
pens that George Is the kind of a fellow
I can keep on the bench when ho slumps
nnd then when he does set back In tlm
"fray he can slam tho pill with as much
force as over,
"My pitching Isn't worrying me. I've got
seven men ready to Btart on the mound
now. Covelcskie, Dubuc, Dauss, Cunning
ham and tho others. Dauss Isn't seriously
Injured ; never was. Just happened that he
was near Youngstown and thought lio'd
see Bonesetter Iteose. Funny how much
Christian Science there Is In baseball. The
longer I'm In the game, the more I real,
lie It."

Injury to Side Keeps Moran's
Star on Bench Doak
to Twirl
BT, LOUIS. Mo., July 8. With Alexander
getting the Phillies off to a running start
on the second Invasion of the We$t by the
Quakers, Manager Moran Is hopeful of be
ing ab)e to cut down the lead of the
Brooklyn Superbas before he returns to
Philadelphia. The brilliant shutout of
Alex against the Cardinals yesterday
failed to tighten the race between the Phils
and the Dodgers, as P.oblnson's team won
from tho punchless Beds.
In the Becond game of tho series the
Phillies probably will face "Willie Doak'. the
spltter, with Bob Steele, a left-hander, as
second choice. According to Manager Mo
ran. ho has Ave twlrlers available. t
"It will be most anybody but Rlxey, who
pitched the last game egalnst Boston, and
Alex, who worked yesterday," he said to
the JSysninq Lbdqsu correspondent.

TO STARS grace' the sky tonight," as
XN a Roman general once roso from his
cot to remark, after he had peered at the
eve from between the flaps of his tent.
The ancient thought applies In n way to
tho golf situation hereabouts for the next
twa-months. The tournaments scheduled nro

Cameron Buxton, present champion of
Philadelphia, expects to bo too busy to lake
part In any of the scheduled events till fall.
Hugh Wllloughby, champion of Florida, Il
going to Newport shortly for hla vacation
and will bo out of tho running. Others of
the Big Ten nnd Twenty will also not be
able to play In the tourneys, which are
handicap for tho most part, In the hot
months'.
Things Btart with a bang for tho "duffer"
next week when tho first-class tournament
of tho Golf Association of Philadelphia will
bo held at St. David's dolf Club. The
"first class" part of It Is misleading since
"first clnss" players are distinctly barred
from tho going.
No "Class" In Class Tourney
Tho entry Is not even "class," for no
ployor with a handicap less than 11 la al
lowed to play. The class part refers to the
fact that tho play will be divided Into threi
classes: A. thoso with 11 to 1 handicaps:
B, those 15 to 18; and C, those of 19 and
over. Sixteen will qualify In each class at
18 holes, on tho first day and after that
there will be two days of match play at II
holes.
No handicaps will be allowed within the
slxtoens. TheHourney Is an excellent Idea
Blnco It keeps players of tho same relative
ability In tho snmo slxtecns. Tho wlnners'ln
each flight will receive a cup and the run-ners-up
a prlre. Tho entrance fee of 2 is
not largo considering the handsome prlres.
Entries cIobo on Tuesday. A fine field Is
expected to enter.

Flock of Birds
A regular aviary was let loose over the I
Country Club course in the finals for the
team championship yesterday.
Fltzwllllam Sargent, had the biggest
"stable," for he eased three birds and an
eagle Into tho cups In tho morning. II ,
was closely followed byalter Plell with
three birds, Buxton had a putt for nn
eagle and had some birds, Just a few casual
ones, you know.
Tho blrdlest of all was that of Horace . "
Franclno, Huntingdon Valley, who ran one
from bock In the haze all the way up and
Into the cup on the 16th.- Ho, landed his
second on the green, but far ovor, and
Fltzwllllam Sargent, Merlon, was not four
feet away.
Sargent looked to have the hole, and the
four-ball match would then have stood S
up In favor of the Brothers Sargent. '
But Sargent mlBsed his putt and the .
match was suddenly all square, one of
those Uttlo jolts hard to realize, but all
too true.
Tho old school nnd the new was repre
sented In tho match between Howard Perrln
and Oeorgo W. Elklns, Jr. Perrln, In the
span of the last five years, was rated ns
the best player In the city and had no
trouble In his matches. But the younger
players are stealing up on htm now, fn
demonstrated by Elklns' win, 6 up.
Cameron Buxton came to the 18 th hole
both times yesterday In a happy frame of
mind. A large gallery was gathered, there,
nnd tho champion Just thought ho would
remind them "who's who," so he careletisly
ran down edgo-of-the-grcen putts for two
birds,'
Walter C, Pfell, Huntingdon Valley, mi
playing the best golf of any of the two
Bcoro experts In tho morning. He shot a
7f over the hard and slippery going. Ho
poked his drives Into space like bullets out
of a rifle.
On the 10th he drove 330 on the 17th
320 yards, and on the 18thwell down the
creek. The long slopes greenwards helped,
but the shots had that old kick that the
other fellows envied. Pfell developed a,
round-house curve In the afternoon and '
couldn't get his a. m. distance.
The traps at the Bala courso are here,
there and everywhere. Eouls Washburn,
finalist In last year's championship, found
moro than his share of them against Dr. M.
K. Nelffer In the afternoon.
