NANCY WYNNE TALKS ABOUT THE
GIRL SCOUTS' PARADE AND DRILL
Four Hundred Members of Organization Inaugurated by
Miss Ellen Mary Cassatt Appeared in Their Khaki
Uniforms in a Pageant at Lawndale Yesterday
IT HEALtiT la remarkabio how wonder
fully the Qlrl Scout Idea, which has
beon-talcen up hero by Ellen Mary Cassatt,
has cauglfThold, so to speak, and nt least
400 hundred girls have Joined the ranks,
numbering among their members girls In
Miss Cassatt's own walk of life, wage-
earners, teachers, playground Instructors,
secretaries and women In various other
professions. To me it seems very de
lightful that the'ro should bo this sort
of camaraderie among all classes, and
I congratulate tho girls who have gotten
together and started this bound-to-be-healthful
exercise. Imagine, tho society
was only Inaugurated on Juno IB, and so
great has been tho demand for member
hip ft has beon necessary to open an
odlce and see peoplo by appointment.
Tho girls appeared yesterday for the
first time In publlo and looked most at
tractive in their khaki camp suits as they
marched and drilled out at Lawndale.
They aro planning to go to camp later
In tho summer, and there aro certain tests
which each must pass through before re
ceiving a badgq from headquarters.
Tho motto of tho Qlrl Scouts Is "Bo
Prepared." Thoy are not, I understand,
affiliated with the Boy Scouts In any way,
but aro a sort of sister organization.
Many persons motored out to Lawn
dale yestorday to witness the pageant,
which began at 9 o'clock. Associated with
Ellen Mary Cassatt In tho work are Rosa-
He Dolan, who, llko Ellon Mary, Is a great
lover of outdoors, and who rides a great
deal. Owen Martin, daughter of Judge
Martin, Is njso on tho executive board, as
Is SIdnoy Hills, tho charming daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. William Struthcrs Ellis, and
who Is engaged to young Badcllfte Chcs
ton, Jr. Ellon Mary Cassatt Is the daugh
ter of Mrs. Gardner Cassatt, and Miss
Solan's parents aro Mr. and Mrs. Clarrto
Dolan. They tell mo that In .35 States
thoro' aro Qlrl Scouts, and tho tests which
they havo to undorgo. Include cooking,
sewing, first aid, housekeeping, nature
study, laundering, music, swimming, gar
dening, painting, photography, marksman
ship and various other kinds of things.
Each company Is named after a flower,
and tho flower Is embroidered In tho
natural colors on whlto cloth and Is np
pllqucd on to tho blouso of tho wcaror.
Thoro are rumors that another wed
ding may tako place up at Mount Orotna
beforo tho troops Anally depart. That Is,
tho young man in question declares he
will If ho can only persuado her to.
They are engaged already, and ho Is a
member of a cavalry troop. Tho little
"sho" in question Is tho daughter of a
P. R. R. man. Tho families of tho "ho"
and "she," I understand, do not antici
pate any action, but It Is hnfd to toll
what tho young peoplo may do with tho
prospect of a long separation beforo
them. Tlmo will tell, but I think wo may
safely predict. If war docs come, there
will bo a wedding In camp this week.
