till Wednesday, when many of the showings
would end, the Photoplay Editor will alter
his policy of review b, bit this week
by giving In today's Issue some Intimation
of the nature of new films which may help
readers to observe a safe and sane Fourth.
The Stanley opens the first halt of the
week with a member of felegfeld's Follies,
Anna Pennington, advanced to photoplay
stardom In a FAmous Players-rafamount
film, "Susie Snowflake." "Wld" Cunning,
who conducts about the only film weekly
bent strictly on review and nothing but
review, says of the feature, "Very clever
star, fine atmosphere and types make this."
He finds the story elementary but effi
cient. Of the new star he says: "Tho
being Mies Pennington's first appearance
In the films, there was naturally consider
able Interest In her work. I am sure that
there wVl bo an enthusiastic response to
her personality over the country, becauso
the has given us an exceptional performance
and one which will surely rank her as one
of tho very big possibilities for screen
work." The Dramatic Mirror says that the
producers "made a decidedly lucky hit."
Altogether, things look cheerful for patrons
of the Stanley.
"Wld" Cunning Is even moro enthusiastic
about tho new Inco-Trlangle film which
comes to tho Arcadia today to stay tho
woek, Ho lilies Its mystery .story and Its
general air of novelty. Ho haB a lot of
good things to say for Mr. Koenan, and ho
even admitted that Enid Markcy "gets
away" with tho fcmlnlno lead.
Tho Dramatla Mirror sayB of "The Phan
tom:" "Tho director has taken an exceptionally
clever and woll-conBtmctcd story, told It
clearly and concisely In pictures while re
taining but not overplnylng the details. In
tho plcturlzatlon there Is ono dominant
charactor. "Phantom" Farrell, ahd It Is
nrotind him that a Btrong story, not a series
of Incidents or robborlce, Is wovon. Frank
Kecnan plays this role, and a finor Inter
pretation of tho pnrt would hardly bo prob
able. As tho valet and assistant, Crabhc,
Robert McKIm is most effective. Enid
Mnrkey 'would bo moro pleasing If sho did
not ovorplay her part."
Of the new Morosco-Pnramount film,
"Tho Making of Maddalena." which will
recelvo Its first showing In Philadelphia nt
the Palace today, the Moving Picture World
snysi
In "Tho Making of Maddalena," the splon
dld characterization of Edna Goodrich, Is
tho making of a picture that has much to
commend It. She Is tho centro of Interest
throughout. It Is n pathetic rolo, that of
Maddalena, an Italian girl, a painter's
modol, who falls In love with a would-bo
artist who comes to Home to study. Miss
Goodrich's portrayal of Maddalena, tho
timid, sweet-faced Btop-daughtcr of a sot,
Is marked by unusual charm and sympa
thy, and also Judgment."
Tho Garrlck will display tonight a now
set of war films, "How England Pre
pared," which were taken by Charles
Urban, with tho co-operation of tho Brit
ish Government, and which havo lately
boon shown In Now York. Thoy depict In
a score of ways tho preparations which
England mado when war began. The manu
facture of a soldier from tho recruiting
olllco to tho trenches will bo shown. The
war Itself Is deliberately Ignored, so far
as "actual photographs" (usually faked)
of fighting goes. Thero Is promised, how
over, a. gcnulno picture of the blowing up
of a German blockhouse and some views of
tho North Sea fleets very close to action.
Today and tomorrow the Victoria ro
vIvcb "Not My Sister," a Triangle film, with
Norma Talmadga playing tho lead. It has
already been seen nt tho Arcadia. An
added fcaturo will be a now two-reel film,
starring Fay Tlncher, 'Tho Two O'clock
Train."
At tho Forrest, "The Ne'er Do Well"
continues. It Is a 10-reel film version of
tho novel by Rex Boach, who wroto "Tho
Spoilers." Orchostral, vocal and sconlo nc
compantmonts add to the entertainment.
