Professional Operators Concentrate Efforts in War-Order
Stocks, Basing Selling on Emergency Revenue Bill
Galling for Tax on Sales of Munitions
' NEW YORK, July 3.
With absenteeism general on thp Stock Exchange floor nnd In the Wall etreet
district, market movements today were loft to tho mercy of tho trading element
committed to tho bear side. Tho professional traders on the floor and tho outside
bearish operators concentrated their efforts against tho war-order stocks, basing
tho aggressive selling on tho provisions of the Administration emergency revonuo
bill to be Voted on Wednesday In the House calling for a tax of 6 to 8 per cent
on gross sales of munitions.
Baldwin Locomotive, Crucible and Industrial Alcohol were hammered down
more than S points In the first hour, and severe tosses wero sustained In Westing
house. Maxwell Motors nnd Studebaker. Tho position of Industrial Alcohol was
most vu1n6rablo because of the Indications that Industrial is being In constant
supply against expected offerings of new stock to present holders at par.
Tho leading Industrials and railway Issues were not affected by this weakness
In the war-order group. Wabash A preferred was In demand from Important
sources, Including high-class bankers, and advanced 1 to abovo 52. It Is gener
ally assumed .on the Street that this, stock wilt bo placed on tho dividend list within
tho next two weeks.
Union Pacific was scare and made a fractional advance on small buying, and
Reading" and a number of other railroad stocks also showed moderto gains in tho
forenoon. A feature of tho trading In railway stocks was tho increasod activity In
Southern Railway common, which Is Influenced to a great extent by tho favorablo
cotton report published on Saturday.
United States Steel common continued to reflect persistent syndlcato accumula
tion nnd advanced to 80U In tho early trading, but after heso buying orders wero
filled lost its gain.
ONE COTTON OPERATO R BUYS
25,000 BALES ON THE CALL
Big Purchase at Opening Is Either for
Covering or Foreign Account
NEW TOIUC July 8.- What wu perhaps
the most remarkable openlnff In normal
times was wltnted on the Cotton Ex
I chtlnga this morning. One operator vir
tually made the market by purchasing about
3tr,000 bales of fall months.
The tone was strong, with July and Oc
tober 3 points lower and other months 2 to
6 points higher. Between tho low point on
October and the high point on January
there was a difference of 13 points, as com
pared with Saturday's closo.
The buying by tho one trader was be
lieved to be covering of a line of shorts put
out some time ago, although thoh) were
some who believed It might be for foreign
account. Commission houses. Wall stroet
room traders and Southern Interests wero
selling, but all the' offerings were freely
taken and moro was bid for.
Tho early advance carried tho acllvo
months about 6 to 8 points net higher with
December contracts selling up to 13.17 or
IS points abovo tho lowest level reached
since tho publication of the Government's
report,
Tho market hesitated around 11 o'clock
and prices later eased several points from
tho best.
Reports of rain In extreme southwest
Texas may have had some Influence, but
the market In a. general sense seemed to
bo fluctuating between the bearish Ideas
of tho yield, based on Saturday's report and
tho apprehension of rapid deterioration In
crop prospects during July and August.
The receipts of cotton at the ports for
the day were estimated at 8000 bates,
against 9233 balos last week and ES76 bales
last year.
