EAULYLOSSES IN STOCKS RECOVERED;
MANY ISSUES RANGE ABOVE YESTERDAY

Good Buying Has Been Done All Through Recent De
clinesAssertion That Roosevelt Will Indorse

High Points in Today's Financial News
New York bank statement showed a decline of $25,578,000 in average
loans and a decrease of $2i,5H,000 in actual loans. Deposits in both state
ments were smaller and the average reserve ncreascd $24,i66,tOO and the
actual reserve fell $1B,SS0.070. $3,500,000 more gold arrived in New York
-M
from Canada. Hank clearings of country for the ween J,9.t per cent, larger.
Price of bar silver higher in New York and London, Earnings of subsidiary
companies of Atlantic Gulf and West Indies larger in April. Public Service
Corporation of New Jersey May earnings showed increase, Conditions in
steel market quiet. Commercial failures fewer in week
N15W YOIUC, Juno 24.
Although declines wcro shown In the enrly trading this morning1, there wns
.it fur better tono to tho market and before ninny minutes passed the belated liquida
tion resulting' from recent declines had apparently run Its course. Krom then on
until tho close substantial Improvement was shown, tho early losses being recov
ered, and many stocks nt the end of the half dny ranged well nbovo yesterday's
final figures.
Tlicro was much In tho character of tho trading to Infer that good buying
littd been dono In leading stocks all through tho recent declines, and thnt ninny
of these Issues, which were thrown on tho market at concessions, hnd gone Into
strong hands and would bo held for much higher prices. This does not refer,
however, to the many speculative bubbles which depend wholly on pool manipula
tion or Individual activity to determlno their market movements. It Is to bo ex
pected that such stocks will have violent fluctuations, and that they will bo sup
plied by tho general list.
Tho chief Incentive. In determining today's speculative trend was tho asser
tion made in many quarters that Theodore Roosevelt will como out tomorrow with
u full Indorsement of tho Republican presidential candidate, and that this action
will bo taken by some powerful Interests ns a bullish lncentlvo and used as a
reason for aggrosslvo buying In tho coming week, especially of stocks llko United
States Steel common.
Thero Is continued Interest, of course. In tho Mexican situation, but, ns a
matter of fact, tho disquieting Mexican developments wero only Incidental to
much of tho selling which occurred since tho beginning of tho week. It wna
known thut many large blocks of stocks had been hanging over the market for
some time, and It Is to bo expected that leading bears will gun for these accounts
and get them.
Tho weak spots In tho market hnvo been nlmost entirely eliminated and In
their placo a short Interest of extensive proportions has been created, making
tho market now sensltlvo to bullish Influence. More attention. must bo expected
to bo paid to known values and earning power and when theso factors nrc consid
ered a broader demand should appear.
$3,500,000 In Canadian Gold Deposited in New York

Assay OIIIco this morning for tho account of J. V, Morgan & Co. Tho gold camo
from Canada and brings tho totnl on tho present up to $79,240,000.

CHICAGO, June 24. Some covering rc
ulted In a better tono to tho wheat market
this morning, but considerable nervousness
was In evidence. July opened nt 99 'He. to
99Tc, against 99c. at tho close yesterday
and rallied to $1.0014 ; September started at
$1.03 to $1.02i, compared with $1.02 at
tho end yesterday; December ranged from
$1.06 to $1.05:1 at the outset, compared
with $1.05i, yesterday's last price, nnd sold
at $1.05.
There were reactions from tho best. Un
derlying sentiment appeared to bo bearish
because of better weather and continued
pressure of old crop supplies. Tho market
at Liverpool was dull hut steadier.
It was expected that world shipments to
the United Kingdom for tho weok would
be heavy. It Is believed that supplies for
tho millers of tho United Kingdom are. as
sured. Tho receipts at Minneapolis and Duluth
today were 383 cars against 108 cars last
year: at Chicago, 44 cars compared with
9 cars at Winnipeg, 542 cars against 46
cars.
Corn was steady. Weather conditions,
however, wero more favorable for tho new
crop. Tho receipts hero today were 164
cars. Tho market at Liverpool was dull.
Consumption In the United Kingdom ia
small and stocks are fair.
Oats were quiet. The receipts here
today were 113 cars.

NEW YORK COFFEE MARKET
NEW YORK. June 24. The cofTee mar
ket was quiet and easy at the opening
this morning, with first prices showing de
clines of 3 to 3 points.
The market was quiet and lower affer the
opening, with sentiment more or less unset
tled, due to the weakness In Brazil, which
caused liquidation by tired longs and tiding
'for New Orleans and commission house ac
count. Receipts at the ports continued
heavy, and there appeared to be nothing In
the way of bullish news which might tend
to stimulate values for the time being. The
local spot market was quiet and unchanged
at 9?ic. for nio No. 7.

ACTIVITY LACKING IN IiONDS
Prices a Shade Easier Purchasing
Power Absent
NRW YORK, Juno 24. Investment
houses' In Wall street maintained at the
close ot the week that they were nt a loss
to understand the complete lack of activity
In the bond market. Owing to the lessened
demand prices were a shade easier, while
the Interest return was slightly better than
the prevailing level of the last few months.
Thero did not appear to be any pressure
to sell bonds, but there was a complete lack
of purchasing power noted throughout the
list.
There was a feeling that If war Is de
clared In Mexico the United States would
ptjt out a large Issue of securities, and the
opinion was expressed that money rates
would perhaps seek a higher level than at
present. With this in view It was consid
ered likely that the large Institutions that
are holders of considerable amounts of
bonds would dispose of a part of them In
order to have funds available to take ad
vantage of the expected higher money rates.
To date, however, there has been no indica
tion of any pronounced advance in rates for
either call of time money, although the pre
vailing quotations are somewhat above
those of the last winter and spring.
No Change in Lead Prices
NEW YORK, June 21. There has been
no change In lead prices, the American
Smelting and Refining Company maintain
ing its quotation at 7c a pound New York,
while outside interests continue to shade
the price to 6 a Some demand is re
ported from Russia, and It Is understood
that about 250 tons have been purchased
for this account during the last two days.
Power Co. Adds $70,000,000 Stock

Company, of Chicago. III. frorq J3O.O0O.00O

corporated st Dover on December 23, 1909,
with a capital stock of J10.000.000, and on
November 31. 1910. Its capital stock ivas

LONDON", June 24. Tho war map has
been nltered considerably In our favor since
the trcinndotiR Russian drlvo Into Austrian
Oallcla and the sensational news that Tur
key lias-tost Meccn. Without exaggerating
tho value of prestige, on may confidently
nssert Hint tho loss of Mecca to tho Sultan
Is ti capital blow.
Theso two events followlnc the naval
cntiintrnphe may bring the Central Powers
a long wny In the direction of terms which
could bo nrccptcd.
The depression In tho stock market here
Is partly tho nnttirnl reaction from tho
buoyancy of the last few weeks, but Is
mainly due, I think, to the Apprehension
shored with New York ot your Mexican
embarrassments. Nevertheless, the fnct
that consols Rtaiiil nt 30, ns against G7 last
November, when minimum prices wero re
moved, testifies to lite wonderful confidence
of our people and tho vast reserves of
wealth still existing. It Is now held for
certain that all minimum prices will bo
removed tho first week In July.
This Is probably tho only belligerent
country In which tho working clnsses ns
a whole nro not feeling tho economic strain,
yet they nro paying heavy war taxes for
their luxuries.
lludget modifications wero welcomed, but
you will nhscrvo thnt Chancellor McKenna
surrendered very little revenue.
The supplies of sugar seem improved.
This Is satisfactory, ns strnwberrles nnd
cherries have to bo converted on an enor
mous scale Into jam.
The Improvement of Scandinavian ex
change comes ns a welcome sequel to tho
Scandinavian loan. Tito depression In tho
market is attributed to tho misfortune of
Austria nnd Turkey and the Internal eco
nomic distress In tioriuany.

Itradstrcet's pays: "New business Is
good, better than usual at this season, but
Just now buyers prefer to take a middle
ground for their operations, awaiting, tho
while, crop developments, possible lower
prices nnd freer movement of goods by re
tall dealers. So far tho only effects of
Mexican disturbance besides the calling out
of service thousands of useful workers,
has been stimulation of demand for pro
visions, essential army equipment, hcrses
and mules. Indeed. It Is possible that, Just
as sagging tendencies In trade wero logical
ly due, homo wants for preparedness may

FIVE TO ELEVEX-POIXT GAINS
IN COTTON MUCKS AT STAHT
Wall Street Interests Sellers, With De
mand From Liverpool
NI'.W YORK. June 21. At tho start tills
morning the cotton market wps firm, with
prices 5 to 11 points higher. This was
only a partial response to the strength In
Liverpool. Wall street interests wore the
best sellers and supplied virtually all tho
months. Some of tho longs also sold, ap
parently taking profits.
Spot houses bought July and some of the
Importnnt room operators also took various
months, but tho best demand come from
Liverpool, which purchased all positions
from October on. After tho call, the dis
tant options dropped 1 point, while July and
October fell 6 nnd 4 points, respectively,
but this was merely an adjustment of
prices, as the near months scored the largest
gains at the opening.
Liverpool cables reported advances of
2'i to 4 points, whereas prices were due to
como 514 to 714 points lower. A private
cable stated that ho market was a small
affair, with little cotton for sale.
Weather conditions wcro unsettled. Rain
was reported from many stations in tho
cotton belt, with more than 24 inches at
Oklahoma City. The report was made that
there had been too much moisture recently.
Temperatures were slightly higher.
The receipts of cotton at tho ports for
the day were estimated at 10,000 bales,
compared with 10,188 bales last week and
7215 bales last year.
