NEW YORK, Juno 13.
The movements of prices on tho Stock. Exchange today were tllsnppolntlnK
to tho speculative element on tho floor, there being a constant supply of many
important Issues at substantial concessions with a gradually lessening demand.
It was Impressed on Wall street that the pubjlc ns yet shows no sign of coming
In the market, although It had been hoped that the developments at Chicago and
the satlsfactlbn over the political outlook would proye such nn Inccntlvo as to
create an extensive buying wave and cause vigorous advances In the early part
of i this week., Tho opening of tho stock market yesterday flrst Indicated this
situation and demonstrated tho continued lack of outsldo Interest.
Today soma pools and room traders made demonstrations In various stocks,
causing abrupt upturns, but there was no sustaining power In tho market In tho
last half of tho day, and nearly everything on the list showed some amount of loss,
Tho action of the Mexican group might bo construed as' Indicating that a new
source of uneasiness had been found In tho Increased tension In the Mexican situa
tion, but the properties whose stocks were weakest aro not located In any part
of the danger zones.
Mexican Petroleum, which dropped 3 points, has Its plant at Tamplco, whero
It car bo assured of ample protection, and American Smelting properties are also
In locations In which there Is llttlo fear of Interference or damage because of
Mexican aggression.
Tho movement In Heading on both Its early advance and decline reflected
simply tho operations of a few room traders. Tho advance In American Beet
Sugar was In response to pool manipulation, and activities In other Issues wero
Inspired chiefly by a desire to awaken, public Interest.

CHICAGO, June 13. A fairly good de
mand from cash and commission houses,
ccverlng by shorts and some evidence of
foreign buying, rallied the wheat market
today after It had started weaker, and last
prices were at or only a shade below the
best.
Part of the demand was based on a re
port by Secretary Fowler, of the North
western Grain Dealers' Association, placing
the area of wheat in 'Western Canada nt
10,597,000 acres, against 12,540 acres last
year. '
It was reported that the British Govern
ment was 'In the market for about a million
bushels, but that the terms and shipping
conditions were not attractive. The initial
decline was due to an accumulation of
overnight selling orders, additional weak
ness abroad and favorable weather con
ditions, with the exception that there were
coma rains In Kansas that were not wel
comed, .harvesting being about ready

COTTON MARKET OPENS STEADY,

Principal Seller Is the Man Who Sold
for Mysterious Sources Yesterday
NEW, YOIIK, June 13. At the start this
morning the cotton market was steady, with
prices 2 to 4 points lower, ine came oper
ator who sold heavily yesterday at tho

ing. It was believed nround the ring that .the
snpply came from German sources, ns the
point was made that Liverpool has free
access to tho cables nnd can execute orders
nt any time, while nil tho German business
heretofore hns been either nt tho opening
or closing, nnd the fnct that tho supply
stopped after tho Btart on Monday n,nd was
not resumed until this morning caused this
opinion to be given much attention,
The fluctuations were somewhat Irregu
lar during the flrst hour but demand failed
to broaden on bulges of 2 or 3 polnfs,
while such slight rallies seemed to meet
Homo cotton, nnd prices worked off to a
net decline of 7 to 8 points after 11 o'clock.
The decline carried October contracts to
12.86, or 8 points under last night's close
nnd about IE points tinder the best price re
ported on the rally at tho end of last week.
There was some Southern selling on this
decline, but offerings tapered off ns Decem
ber approached the 13c. level, and the mar
ket was quiet early In the noon hour with
the tone steady, although prices showed llt
tlo rallying power. The Higher temperatures
reported in tho South were considered ns
favorable.

Stronger
Investments
The wonderful prosperity of the
United States has so increajed
the carninR capacity and the
assets of many of the cornpaniet
whose securities we recommend
for investment that, while thtte
securities can still be purchased
to yield a most attractive return
they are intrinsically stronger
today than they ever have been'
before.
For example, we Invite requnii
for Circular No. L-177, , wbloa
describes a Btronir first mortxiri
bond yielding over five per cent,
