"With tho country "waiting for developments at the Republican convention, tho action of tho stock market today wao regarded as perfectly satisfactory by tho leading Interests committed to tho bull aldo. Traders on tho floor sold that the strength which was shown indicated confidence that thcro will bo no split In tho Republican ranks, but it was pointed out by some that It Is too early to regard tho situation as having taken a definite shape, and this feeling restricted operations to a considerable extent Tho Important price movements of tho day wero to higher figures, with most Interest attached to tho railway group. Dividend prospects wore used with effect as reasons for vigorous buying of Southern Hallway preferred and Chesa peake and Ohio, and there was also a bullish demonstration In United States Steel common, which crossed 85 on purchasos by C. D. Barney & Co. Tho room traders holpcd this movement along and thcro was somo outside buying, based on intimations that tho directors havo agreed that tho com mon stockholders are entitled to recognition of their rights by a distribution to xnako up for the period In which no dividends woro declared. There was a allow of strength In Third Avenuo and Intcrborough- Issues, reflecting resumptions of activities by pools which havo long held substantial lines of those stocks. CURB'S TONE BETTER, WITH MOTORS WEAK 1 Brisk Demand for Atlantic Gulf and West Indie? as Well as Other Oil Stocks NEW YORK, Juho 8. The outside rrarltet showed a better tona today as the result of breaking away of the general market Influence of the syndicate opera tions In tho motor stocks. The marking up of those Issues, many of which cannot be. sold because of underwriting and con solidation agreements, has been looked on as a menace to the general situation, but the discrimination by banks and the fact that little public buying was induced, seems to havo railed a halt In these efforts. One of the newer consolidations, Motor Products, which sold as high as 87, dropped today frpm 80 to 72, and United Motors broke from 85 to 8)1 H, while Pcrlman Rim declined from 1FJ to 150. The recessions seem to Indicate that 'the motor stocks have had their day as far as violent advances are concerned. There, was a brisk demand for Atlantic Gulf and "West Indies, which sold at the new high record of S0$-j, and the oil stocks gen erally were active and strong, with Okla homa Producing moving up from TA to 7JJ. United Western was In gooB demand, with most of the buying coming from West ern sources, based partly on Information that the company Has about completed ar rangements for the acquirement of valuable properties In Mexico. There was good buying of Kapo at EH to 5, Monlton Silver was also in good demand on the news of the opening of a Mw vein carrying a largo percentage of (liver. Zinc Concentrating held strong. The In creased, demand for the stock has been fol lowed by statements of a pending contract with the Utah-Apex. GOOD SUPPLY OF COTTON FORCES PRICES DOWNWARD Fairly Good Demand on tho Call Fails to Keep Mnrket Steady NEW YORK, June 8. The cotton market at the opening this morning was barely steady, with quotations two to four points lower. New Orleans was the prin cipal seller here, with spot Interests buying July and selling the distant months. Liverpool was an Important purchaser of January, Although there was a fairly good demand on call the supply Increased, and before the end of the first 15 minutes prices had been forced off three to five points from tho opening figures. Prices worked about 11 to 12 points net lower before the end of the first hour under New Orleans selling of new crop month and scattering local pressure. Liverpool's buying of July, October and December was one of the early features, but otherwise there seemed to be little demand and the tone was unsettled with the market com paratively narrow during the middle of the morning. Reports of unseasonably low temperatures In the western belt seemed to create some scattered demand in the late morning, and there were rallies of 3 or 4 points from the lowest after midday, Minimum tem peratures at a good many stations in Arkansas, Mississippi, Texas and Oklahoma were down In the fifties or lower in some few Instances, and while many local trad ers seemed to feel that such temperatures if not continued would hardly do any damage, there was evidently an expression In somo quarters that they would check the development of tha plant, The receipts of cotton at the ports Mr the day wero estimated at 12,000 bales, compared with 14,590 bales last week, 2263 bales last year and 5518 bales in 19 u. 9g?l u m- 2,n.
