NEW YORK. June 8,
Tharo wns a Rood dcnl of Irregularity about price movements nnd tho
I market tone throughout the day. The disaster to- the English cruiser Hnmi
Bhire, resulting In the deaths of Lord Kitchener and his military staff, was
- looked on with a great deal of apprehension as a disturbing factor .before the
opening, but Its Influence was shown only In the development of weakness In
tho Mercantile Marine' IssUes. Those stocks have always been sensitive to
unfavorable war developments, and there was a lack of buying In the pre
ferred stock this morning with some Important houses. Including Hitter, nnd
Gross, appearing as sellers, causing the price to fall four points.
Tho copper stocks made only n trifling response to the Increased dividend
distributions, nnd held this trifling gain for only a short time. Utah Copper
advanced 91 to 82H. hut was soon down to 82. Hiitto and Superior, however, on
Which the regular qunrterly and extra dividends were declared, made a gain of
four points to 93;.
There were some wide movements in the motor stocks, Chandler falling
from 125 to 117V4. nnd recessions were noted In both Studcbaker and Maxwell
Motor. Third Avenue was a stronj feature, selling nt G5?i, with buying based
on predictions of an Increase In the dividend rate at the end of the year. Thero
yaa continued persistent buying of Norfolk and Western, which, after early
sales at 133H, rose to the new hlgi record of 130-.
The announcement thnt the leading meeting was conllned to routine mat
ters was disappointing to some holders of that stock. After a three-point ad
vance to above 103 lost virtually all Its gain. Business In tho last half of the
day was generally small In volume, with a disposition prevailing in Important
quarters to wait for definite news from tho Chicago Convention before- mak
ing any extensive commitments on cither side of the market.

Judge George Gray, of Wilmington, pro

NEW YOItlf, June 6. Tho "wild trading
In motor slocks which was the featuro ot
yestorday'o dealings on tho Broad Street
Curb was checked today by the tightening
of the money market. It was calculated by
largo handlers of money that about $50,
000,000 will ho temporarily withdrawn In
order to provide for the cash payments
cntlcd for In the consolidation, and arrange
ments to meet these requirements necessi
tated recalling of loans early In tho day
by a number of Important banking Insti
tutions. Around noon the rate for call money ad
vanced from 3 to 314 per cent, and there
was very little offering at that rate. Be
ports that tho rato for call money ndvanced
to 4 per cent, were In circulation on tho
Curb and caused some urgent celling of
United Motors, which quickly dropped to 87,
a loss of 7 points from yesterday's high
figure.
Thero Is a good deal of question now as
to the relative position of United Motors
after Its absorption of tho other companies
compared with tho valuo of those stocks
before tho consolidation was proposed.
Other motor Btocks wero also heavy, with
Chevrolet selling down to 2G6 early In tho
day, and losses of around 2 points were
recorded In Edmund and Jones, Peerless and
White Motor.
Tha movement In these stocks had a rp
strlcted effect on trading in other Issues,
but Mldvale Steel was an exception to tho
general heaviness, advancing from ,03?i to
Gl'.S.
Flemish Lynn was traded In at 6 and
G VS. The oil stocks generally showed a
steadier tone, with Metropolitan Petroleum
selling at 22 nnd -22 ',4.
Monitor Silver held firm, with sales ot
2 and 2',i. ZIno Concentrating sold at
4 to 4 18. Kathodlon Bronze preferred
