Prices Take n Drop Crop Prospects
Good Over Atlantic States Bolt
NEW YORK. May 31. Qood Liverpool
cables were offset by favorable weather
condltiona In tha South, which held the cot
ton market In check, and tho opening: prices
were 3 points hleher to 1 point lower, with
tho tone ateady.
Trading was light, and after the start
there woa gome pressure from scattorcd
sources which forced quotations off a point
or two. Wall street purchased moderately
and spot houses took some July. Liverpool
was a light buyer of January and Bold
March.
Liverpool quotations were to 6M points
higher. Private cable's stated that the mar
ket was rather quiet, with llttlo offering.
The Bpot demand abroad is flood. 20,000
bales having been sold In the last two days
at an advance of 4 points.
Early offerings were well enough taken
to give the cotton market a steady under
tone, but July liquidation became mora ac
tive toward the middle of the morning,
while general business: was comparatively
quiet, and prices broke some 9 to 11 points
from last Monday's closing figures. Thla
decline carried July contracts off to 11.C8
or back to within 3 points of last week's
low level, while October sold at 12.80, com
pared with 12,70, the recent low point.
Offerings tapered off after the decline of
somo 9 to 11 points from Monday's closing
figures and the market was quiet during
the noon hour with prices showing rallies
of 2 or 3 points from the lowest.
