Mre'eta, The answer of the association Is
' ttfat In all the max. of Amerlcnn things ho
nhoulcl And his way to the steps which lead
to what la good and true. Of course, it Is
, hard-worked answer, old as the strugglo
for democracy Itself, but tho exhibit of the
Association Is unique, nnd said by many
spectators to be one of the best In the
building.
To begin with, there Is the Immigrant
'elilp. Xt docks beside the platform of Amer
ican opportunity. The Immigrants from all
lands are represented by dolls, and their
lie In tho exhibit depends upon the num
bers contained In the 1010 Philadelphia cen
sus, which showed 392,605 forclgn-born per
sons here and 497,232 men and women of
mixed foreign parentage, whllo tho total
Amerlcnn born, exclusive of tho negro, was
only 533,070, or 37.7 per cent.
Theso Immigrants carry suitcases, which
depots what they bring from foreign shores.
These carry such labels as Lovo for Music,
Folk-Lore, Heroism, Desire, for Democracy,
Artistic Ability, Desire for Education, Su
perstition, Illiteracy, Disease, Materialism,
Low Standard of Living. Crime, Cheap La
bor and, Business Instinct. To weed out
the false from the truo Is the American
job for the Immigrant. If ho dots get
through all this tangled maze of things he
finds himself before tho steps which lead to
democracy, which Is only achieved by work,
tchool, social Interest, citizenship and lib
erty. THE DOWSWAUD PATH
But suppose tlje Immigrant Is unable to
cope with the American situation. Then
ho comes inevitably Jo the City of Destruc
tion, whose main street leads downward,
which Is symbolized by a row of houses.
The first Is the ward political club par
ticular party unnamed. In front of It stands
an old-tlmc Bible exhortcr, a few feet dis
tent from a "sporty" Individual who bears
the. label, "The Unvarnished Scnmp." Ad
Jolplng tho political club presumably by
a mere coincidence Is a saloon, John Bar
leycorn, proprietor. "The Painted Lady"
stands out In front nnd don't forgot It Is
ne uoor to me ward political club. Then
comes n furnished-room houso, and beside it
a movlng-nlcture place dlsnlnylng the day's
feature, "The Sorrows of Felice."
It Is possible that Felice had these sor
rows because he was a regular attendant
of the establishment next door. This estab
lishment Is a dance Joint catering to "gents
and ladles." Satan & Co. are tho propri
etors; They serve freo lunch and maintain
"Indies' entrance." Apparently, they do a
bur business between dances, nnd after
wards. In wines nnd other lesi expensive but
equally as effective for the purpose.IIquors.
DESTINY OF CHILDREN-.
Many children are playing In the streets.
This part of the exhibit Is realistic enough,
but more could be added bv clvinc- n rt.mnn.
elratlon of something happening nearly
every day Just now an automobile running
rdpwn some youngster.
Responsible for the City of Destruction,
according- to a placard, nre corrupt gov
ernment, traffic In citizenship, civic sloth
fUIness, class segregatipn. unemployment,
seasonal work and low wage. TVhen democ
racy is something more than a vague, much
talked ft Ideal, then will be a society with
health, righteous government,, education,
public spirit, residential democracy and In
dustrial evolution. So states another
placard.
