That was how Ted Meredith celebrnted
the two records ho had broken In tho big
carnival a rew hours berore. Instead of
parading through tho streets with his namo
tacked on his back, ho sought quietness
from the maddening throng.
We found Meredith In his secret retreat
, anil squeezed Into n chair bcsldo him.
"Pretty nlco day's work," wo remarked
when wo discovered that tho magazine was
taking up nil of his attention. "A couplo
of records will help a llttlo."
Awfully Tired
"Geo, but I am tired," replied tho Pcnn
flyer. "Never was so tired In my life. It
was hard work." And ho closed his mnga
no and looked over tho crowd of other
Uiletcs, who attracted no more attention
than Biirnum & Bailey's circus parado.
, "Did you havo any Idea that you would
break two records before tho races?" wo
uked.
"I didn't know," was the nnswer. "You
never can toll about records. ' If tho field
Is fast and thero Is strong competition, any
thing Is likely to happen. Thero was a
good bunch of runners In tho quarter mile
and I was forcod to do my best from the

"At any rate, I consider myself mighty
lucky, nnd I want to thank Wlllcox, of
Harvard, for tho world's record. Ho pushed
me hard, and I tell you we wero going
some when wo rounded tho turn. I expected
him to bo right on my heels down the homo

"'I wanted to bent you, today, Ted,' ho

mado mo break the Intorcolleglato record,
for It was necessary to make fast tlmo In
order to beat him.
"Ynlo was the big surprise of tho meet.
No ono expected to boo Old Ell pllo up 20
points, but Johnny Mack has a well-balanced
team and deseivcs lots of credit for
mo showing."
Is Quite Modest
Hero Meredith got up, tucked the mnga
zlno under his nrm, skirted tho crowd and
went to his room.
Tho Penn cnptaln ended his career as a
college nthlete tho same way that It began.
Entering tho University as n freshman
with tho world's record for tho half mile
to his credit, ho was ono of tho most sought
for men In college. Ho refused to bo lion
ized, however, nnd Impressed on nil of his
friends that ho was no bettor than any ono
else. When ho becamo a sophomore ho was
a friend to alt of tho, freshmen nnd aided
many by his advlco. It wns this trait that
madb him tho moat popular man In col
log. Wonderful Record
Meredith accomplished something Satur
day that nover has been equaled In the
annals of sport. Two records havo been
broken In ono meet before, but never In
thoso two events. Tho quarter and half
mllo runs are tho hardest racos on tho card.
Whon nn athleto finishes one ho generally
Is too tired for anything else. Ted, how
ever, had wonderful rccuperatlvo powers,
and lie needed them to get by.
Ho rested ono hour between tho races,
nnd when he appeared for the half-mllo run
ho seemed to bo as fresh as ever.
WIndnngle. of Cornell, and Overton, of
Yale, tried to repeat In the hnlf after n
grueling rnco In the mile, but they found
tho pace too fast, and dropped to tho rear.
Scuddcr, of Pcnn, ran a wonderful raco
In tho half, finishing third, and surprising
tho critics, who failed to glvo him a placo
In tho early dope. Tho Penn man ran In
1:56, and should be n star performer next
year.

DURBOROW CREATES
DISTANCE RECORD
Philadelphia Swimmer Paddles
From Riverton to Bristol
and Retuxn
By swimming from Rlvorton, N. J., to
Bristol, Pa., nnd return, a distance of 20
miles, Charles B. Durborow yesterday
cronted a new dlstanco record for tho upper
Dolawaro River.
Only tho Philadelphia to Chester and ro
turn Bwlm In tho lower Delawaro, which
Durborow 1ms negotiated twice, can out
rank this swim In length. It retiulreil Dur
borow exactly nlno hours and eight min
utes to complete his round Journey.
Durborow swam 23 strokes to tho minute
throughput, and except for bloodshot eyes
seemed none tho worso for his long grind.
Durborow, as Is his custom, took no nour
ishment and, while tho water wns rough, It
appeared to bother htm but little, his only
complaint being that nt times It w.is too
warm.
In two weeks Durborow will finish his
training for tho Vlrglnl Capes swim, .by
swimming from Philadelphia to Chester
and return a third tlmo.
