t Statement of condition of members of New York Clearing House Asso
ciation showed increase in average loans of $17,376,000 for week andni' de

actual, reserves fell f 11,980,960. Plan for reorganization of Curb not opera

regular. t Graselli Chemical Company declared 3 1-3 per cent extra on common

per cent, above same week last year. Price of bar silver lower in Mew York
and London.
NKW YOllK, May 27.
Today's stock market was of a holiday character and the outlook Is that there
trill bo few In attendance In the Wall street district Mondny.
There was only one member of any of the leading Stock Exchnngo firms on
duty during the day, and that one stayed In the city only as n representative of his
firm because It Is absolutely necessary and one of the rules of tho Exchange that
om,e otto shall bo on hand In each oillce to attend to whatever business may
eomo up.
This made the board room floor and the brokers' offices present a. deserted
appearance, and the statement that the market was of a holiday chnractcr Is
putting: It mildly.
With these conditions prevailing, price movements were vlrtuolly nt the mercy
of the room traders, the same as they were In tho half day after Good Friday.
In Reading, however, there was some Impressive selling, that stock being
supplied by Booth, Pearl & Co. and V. U. Keech & Co. Part of this selling might
have come from Rockefeller sources and perhaps could be construed as Indicating
ome change In tho Western Maryland situation. Tho absenteeism, however, made
Iho market one In which no substantial amount of stock could be sold except nt
harp concessions.
Tho zinc stocks were Influenced by the slump In the price of spelter In the
London market, following tho declining tendency here. No Importance need be
attached to the declines In such Btocks as Industrial Alcohol and Studebakcr, as
those Issues presented good targets for bearish attacks.
Curb Reorganization Dropped for the Present
NEW YORK, May 27. A letter has been sent to tho members of tho Curb
Market by E. R. McCormlck, chairman, stating that tho vote on tho reorganization
of the Curb Market shows 216 for, 20 against, 96 not voting, 1 blank ballot and 1
defective ballot, and that In view of this unsatisfactory vote and the signed
opposition of N'ew York Stock Exchange firms It is considered unwise to deem tho
plan operative Another chance will bo given to members to change their ballots
already cast and tho time has been extended. The committee Is taking steps to
confer with the opposition.
Grassclll Chemical Declares 32 Extra Dividend on Common
CLEVELAND. May 27. The Grassclll Chemical Company has declared an
extra dividend of 3 per cent, on the common stock in addition to tho regular quar
terly dividends of 1 per cent, on the preferred and common stocks, all payable
Juno 30 to holders of record June 15.
Extra Dividends for Yale & Towne Co.
The Yale & Towne Manufacturing Company has declared Its regular quarterly
dividend of 1 per cent., payable July 1, to stock of record June 23, and nn extra
dividend of 10 per cent., payable June 7, to stock of record May 31.

LONDON, Mny 27 After a fortnight of

the first three dnys of this week, the Un

a quieter mood on perusing Sir Edward

of peace than previously.
The Importance of President Wilson's
attitude cannot bo exaggerated, but the full
report of his speech must be nwaltcd.
Sir Edward Grey's statement about the
Government of franco seems very signifi

PEACE HOPES CAUSE SLIGHT
RISE IX COTTON AFTER DROP
Lower Cables, Due to Liquidation,
Help Early Decline
NKW YORK. May 27. At the opening
of the cotton market today, selling orders
predominated and prices dropped 6 to 7
points under lost night's close.
Influences chiefly connected with the de
cline were disappointing and lower cables,
due to liquidation nnd Jobbers' selling, and
renewed liquidation in July here.
On the decline some covering took place
on the idea that something might develpo
along peace lines over the holiday and
prices rnlllod a little, being about 4 to 6
points net lower at the end of the first
20 minutes, except July, which was 8 nolnts
down.
