ROW AGAINST ORIMSpN VARSITY EIGHT
This Is a photograph of tho Cornell crow, which rows Hnrvnrtl's eifiht late this afternoon.
MACKMEN FIGHT
FOR BERTH IN
FIRST DIVISION
Crowell Will Try to Make It
Three Straight Over
White Sox
BRUNONIAN IN GOOD FORM
Manager Mack insists that "Ml" Crowell,
tho Brown University lad, Is going to prove
tho third star hurler of his staff, and In
tends to work tho big fellow roirularly un
til he strikes his stride, Crowd! has pitched
three splendid games out of four starts,
but could not get tho breaks and lost them
all. IIo will bo sent ngalnst the White
Hox In the final gnmo of the series this
afternoon, and Mack believes that he wilt
break his run of poor luck.
If Crowell comes through as well an
Mack predicts, tho Athletics will be In
splendid shapo for tho first swing through
the West. Joo Bush and Myers are going
along at a terrific clip, nnd Mack thinks
Jack Nabors will win n few games when ho
recovers from his Illness, and all Mack
asks Is a return to form by Crowell,
Yesterday's sensational victory put tho
Mackmen In sixth place, and It Is possible
for them to go Into a tie for fourth place
today by making a clean sweep of tho
series with the all-star cast, led by the peer
less Eddie Collins. Tho fans nre awak
ing to tho fact that Mack has gotten to
gether a game, fighting team, and one which
may fool tho critics beforo the season closes,
and a large crowd Is likely fo be on hand
today.
The Athletics have won seven out of the
last eleven games played, which surpasses
tho work of any other team In the league,
barring Leo Fohl's Cleveland aggregation,
which continues to bowl along at a dizzy clip.
Had It not been for the attack of "nerve's"
ngalnst Detroit the Mackmen would now be
lodged In tho first division, only a. few
games behind Washington. When one con
siders that the Athletics lost tho first six
games of tho season their come-back Is
really remarkable.
Manager Rowland, of tho White Sox, Is
very much worried by the failure of Mb
team to win. It Is one of the most power
ful "paper" aggregations constructed In
years, but somehow tho pale-hosed team
cannot get started. Rowland realizes that
another defeat today at the hands of the
Mackmen will shatter the confidence of his
players and delay the expected winning
streak. He Is In a quandary as to his pitch
ing, selection today.
Faber, his best pitching bet, was batted
hard In tho first game of tho series and
Clcotte, the most effective pitcher In tho
American League against the Mackmen,
lost yesterday. Ho has two stars tn re
serve, but doeB not know which to select.
Jim Scott, another man who troubles tho
Athletics. Is the moBt likely mound choice,
though the success of southpaws against
Mack's team earlier In tho year may Induce
Rowland to trust to "Lefty" Itussell.

TALES OF A WAYSIDE TEE;
EFFECT OF RHYTHM IN GOLF
By GUANTLAND RICE
SOME sago has observed that ono of the
essentials toward golfing buccoss Ib
rhythm. Nothing could lio truer. Tho
second one's yo Is taken from the bnll Ills
head Is shifted nnd all rhythm Is broken.
The second ono moves his body Instead of
his arms, thoro Is no chance for rhythm.
Tho second that one begins to dally over
a shot too long a certain amount of rigidity
ota In, and rlgldty and rhythm do not
tnlx.
Have you ovor observed how many shotfl
you havo missed after you wero forced to
wait for several minutes before playing
your next7 Why7 Because the continuity
of play has boon broken, concentration has
been dislodged, and the result brings a
kink to the rhythm of tho swing that gen
erally brings disaster.
Tho Case of Travors
Tako the caso of Travers. Thero could
bo no more perfect rhythm in a stroko than
that of tho open champion In putting or In
his Iron piny. When Travcrs takes his
ntanco for a putt thero Is seen at once
an nbsenco of all restraint. His entire
attitude la ono of case and naturalnoss.
IIo Is never seen bending well over In a
cramped position or with Ills feot wide
2P.nr,V TIlero ls tag aml comfort In every
oetnll. His stroke Is na smooth as the
breath of the summer wind. Thoro Is no
Jabbing, poking, pushing. Tho rhythm of
his stroke Is without a break.
His wooden club play shown tho differ
ence. Here his swing starts hack proporly
enough. But Just before tho top Is reached
the rhythm Is broken. From a Hat swing
his club goes Into an upright Bwlng and
this kink has caused most of his driving
trouble.
Driving Rhythm
It would bo hard to find bettor rhythm
In driving than that shown by Klrkby,
Gardner, Oulmet and Evana. Of these wo
should say Klrkby and Gardner nro tho
most pleasing to watch, for thero Ib com
plete freedom In their swings and an uttor
absence of any rigidity or strain. Tho only
way that either ever missed a shot from
the tee was by lifting the head too soon.
Wo saw Bob Gardner on one occasion
when ho was asked to poso for some snap.,
shots while driving. After the photographer
had taken tho first picture he remarked:
"No, that Isn't the way I mean, Swing at
the ball Just as you would In a match."
Having heard of tho wonderful distance
that Gardner gets tho camern man evidently
expected to see tho amateur champion
nwlng '.lean oft his feet. "But that Is ex
actly .ha wny I swing all tho time," Gard
ner ntiBwered. "Thnt's tho only way I
know " Which wan exactly true. Thero Is
apparently so little effort In Gardner's
wallop that ono Is surprised to see the hull
travel nB it docs. Ami tho reason Is that
through Uio smoothness of liln swing the
power accumulates nnd reaches Its height
Just as tho club head reacts tho ball,
Thero ls enough wastod power In golf to
control Niagara Falls, And this waste
comes from poor or broken rhythm, Press
ing means applying tho power too soon.
When tho nverago golfer makes up his mind
to try a long carry, tho fault of pressing the
shot comes fn this wny: Having made up
his mind to hit a trifle harder than usual, ho
Is unable to restrain his power until the right
moment, but lunges too quickly, applies
tho blow too soon and the sweep of the
Hiving Is thereby broken.
Ono of tho groat golfing faults that ono
soos upon different courses Is that of lilt
ting too quickly. When this fault develops
thero are two wnys that may work toward
correction. One Is to bring tho club back a
trifle more slowly Just fast enough to hold
tho even sweep. Tho other Is to try to ap
ply the power about bIx or eight Inches be
yond tho ball. In this way tho ball Is struck
beforo the jerk or kink dovclops. But too
frequently most of the power In a stroko
has passed away beforo tho club head ever
reaches Its object.
This' matter of rhythm or timing can also
bo helped by holding the right elbow fairly
well In to the body, Tho secrfnd that right
elbow flics wldo there ls almost suro to bo
a break In tho rhythm of tho swing, and a
most costly one.
Tho Case of Marston
Not ono golf.r In fifty could control that
full Iron shot that Jinx Marston uses. But
Marston has almost perfect rhythm in the
swing. Going hack or coming down, thero
Isn't a break. The circli ls a bis- ono, but
It nil travels Id nn easy, unbroken sweep,
Tho average golfer would find this swing
fatal, for It stands to reason that It Is castor
to maintain rhythm for two feet than for
four feet.
It doesn't always pay In golf to try too
hard. Rhythm and unusual effort raroly go
together. And theso faults are, corrected
as much through mental practlco as through
physical work. The golfer who puts his
mind and thought to the production of nn
easy, natural awing In times of stress and
perturbation will develop ono of the best
habits In tho sport.
