MARKET IS UNDECIDED
By FRANCIS W HIItST
Srcclal Cable lo Evtnlia l.tdotr
LONDON, May 10 The Mock market
today was mildly undecided. There wns
very little buslneM doing Iti any claH of
securities. The financial editor of the
Morning Post, n Bound banking authority,
M,..i,i... titn mri.nl fctnnll break In our
LNew York exchange rate could nnd should
be corrected, considering me resources m
hnnd. .,
Uuslnein minds are turning to the
problem whether the war can bo ended by
diplomacy before public Insollency ot the
Continent becomes unavoidable. Such
Insolvency would fall heavily 1111 i-onuon
ns tho centre of credit. The military dead
lock In the west after the Verdun failure
and Hie stiff attitude of President Wilson
touord submarine ntrocltles suggest tho
possibility of a settlement favorable to
the Allies In the west and south, favorable
to tho Central .Powers In tho near east and
to Ililisla In the Hlack Sea region Lord
Curston's statement hat he never has heard
the Cabinet dlscus-s peace causes some sur
prlie. The Westminster Onzette today Is po
litely skentlcal concerning the real ns dis
tinct from the face value of the German
submit! Ine note.
The Dublin executions are arousing
criticism nnd the Volley of Irish ndnilnls
tratlim will be nrrnlgn.-d tomorrow In the
House ot Lords. The Xurllicllffe press has
now switched off Its in my agitation to an
other panic about food und ships, Its tw-i
Inst policies being characteristically con
tradlctoiy Hieii 11 coalition government
cannot concentrate nil Its energy In the
army, navy, merchant marine, munitions
nnd flnancp at one nnd the same time.

The selling at best wns scattered nud
wns considered to he profit-taking The
point wns made that outBlde Interests had
entered tho mat ket recently on such a.
lnrge scale that profit-taking would have
little or no effect on values and the market
could only be Inlluenced by nctual bearish
news
The market continued very active
throughout the first hour. The feature
of the trading, which seemed to attrnct
the most attention, was the persistent mid
heavy bujlng by trade Interests, but there
was also a largu amount or realizing,
and. after selling 6 to 7 polntH net
higher shortly nfter the call, prices re
acted a shade under last night's clos
ing figures. The offerings were so well
taken, however, that the reduction In the
scattering long Interest made a more
bullish Impression on sentiment than
otherwise, while there wns no sign of
Southern hedge selling, nnd the presence
of n continued traxle demand nlso tended
to operate against reactionary sentiment.
After the call, trading continued largo
and there was no nbatcinent in the tie
mam, while the supply became smaller.
As n T-esult, July advanced 7 points over
Iti opening price, with the other positions
moving up 2 to 3 paints before tho end of
the first 15 minutes of trading.
The lecclpts or cotton at the ports for
the day were estimated nt 14,000 bales,
compared with 11.637 hales last week,
16,062 hales last year and 9685 hales In
