CHECK SYSTEM PRAISED
NEW YOllK, May 9.
With stories of peaco efforts In Europe and Increased hostilities on tho Mex
ican bonier, tho stock market today naturally showed nn uncertain tone, with
'tho larger Interests hesitating about taking a pronounced position on either tho
long or tho short side, nnd a now disposition was created to wait for further
developments. ,
Above all, however, tho nowspapcr statements telling of efforts to bring
about peaco had tho most Influence on trading. These reports Induced selling of
taunltlon stocks In large volume and caused substantial losxes In many of those.
Issues, but whero theso stocks were sold railroad stocks wero bought, and the
tlecllncs In tho war-ordor shares wero moro than offsot by tho higher rango
stabllah,cd In tho railroad list.
Tho strength In theso Issues was regarded with favor by banking Interests,
as Important financial circles havo for a long tlmo used every effort to repress
tho violent movements In tho war-order specialties. Just now these war-order
Btocks seem to havo passed out of the speculative field and to bo Ignored by thoso
;who wero bo enthusiastic about trading In them a little less than a year ngo.
Thcro aro many reasons to bo. found for bullish enthusiasm In the railroad
tahares. A dividend of 2 per cent. Is promised on Wabash "A" preferred by
eomo of tho directors In July, nnd thcro Is a confident belief that at a July meet
Ins tho dividend rato on Baltimore and Ohio will bo Increased.
Tho outlook for restoration of Chesapeake and Ohio to tho d.vldend list Is
also good, and tho hordo of believers In Erlo aro posltlvo that a dividend on Erie
preferred will soon bo declared.
Mexican Petroleum was naturally unsettled by tho military activities called
lor on tho border, and Marino Issues wore lower In responso to tho sinking of tho
Cjcmrlo, although after a short decllno the preferred stock had a vigorous ndvance.

CHICAGO, May 9. Good local buying
strengthened the wheat market today
after It had displayed weakness on free
and rather general selling, following firm
ness at the start. Tho market was helped
by unfavorable crop news from tho South
west, which sent In complalnts.pf damago
from Insects and lack of rain, and by un
expected firmness in the market at Liver
pool, where there was a better general di
xnand. notwithstanding continued liberal
arlvals.
Sold-out bulls reinstated lines. Prices
for the cash article In the Northwest
showed stability and there was evidence
of a good Inquiry for Manitoba for ex
port. Sales ot 800,000 bushels were made
by Americans to the Dutch Government.
Considerable interest was shown In the
news'' from the Mexican border, which
checked outside trade.
The Government crop report, made pub
llo at the close yesterday, waa considered
a standoff. "When compared with pre
vious years, however, the showing was
bullish, the Indicated yield being the
smallest since 1912,
The weather In the Northwest was
favorable and the receipts continued free.
Clearances from tho Beabo'ard were large.
, The International Institute of Agricul
ture at Rome estimates the area of wheat
In Canada to- be 14.9 per cent, smaller
than that of last year. The contract
stock hers Is 2,407,000 bushels, an In
crease of 326,000 bushels for the week,
and compares with 1,534,000 bushels a
year ago.

WHY CANADA AIDS RAILROADS.
Minister of Finance Says War Cause
Decrease in Earnings
OTTAWA. May 9. Minister of Flnanct
White has issued a statement giving th,
reasons for the proposed loan by tin
Canadian Government of $15,000,000 and
$8,000,000 respectively to the Canadlat
Northern and tho Grand Trunk Pncllle
Railroads, to enable the latter to meet
Interest charges due on bonds the coining
year.
The war, It was said, had caused a great
decrease In earnings of all Canadian rail
ways and lowered tne rates at which
they could market their securities.
The Canadian Northern and the Grand
Trunk Pacific Hallroads, according to the
Finance Mtplster, hns sold several hun
dred million dollars' worth of securities
In the United States, England and Conti
nental Europe, and financial disaster be
falling them would damage the whole
credit of Canada. It did not appenr, he
added, that either road would be able to
earn operating expenses and interest
charges for soveral years.
The government, he declared, would ap
point three directors to represent it on
the board of each railroad.
