Fete Held at Octagon House, Once
American Executive Mansion
WASHINGTON, May 9. Everything
but the weather contributed to the suc
cess of the British war sufferers' benefit,
I which oponed a four days' fete last
nlgnt in tne gardens or uciagon uouse,
once the Executive Mansion of the
United States and now the home of the
Amcrlcnn Institute of Architects.
The large garden has been converted
Into an open-air theatre, where this eve
ning the patrons were given an exhibition
of living pictures. This was entitled,
"Tableaux of the Allies," with the subject
and characters as follows: Japan by
Miss Nona McAdoo, Portugal by Miss Ju
liet Crosby, Russia by Miss Margaret
Perln, Italy by Miss Delano. France by
Countess Glzycka as Joan of Arc, Britan
nia by Miss Ethel Harrtman, and Bel
glum by Mrs. Nathan Wyeth. There were
several additional tableaux which In
cluded both men and women from smart
society.
The British and American flags are
crossed over the large Colonial doorway
leading from the house to the garden,
while above the booths are the flags of
the British Empire and the different de
