Griff May Select Young Harper
for Hill Work at
Shibe Park
The Athletics nnd Washington will re
sume tholr scries this afternoon. Man
ager Mack will use either Elmer Myon
or "Ml" Crowell on tho mound, whllo
Orlfllth Is going to depend on ypung Harry
Harper, the sonsatlonal southpaw. Crowell
hns been suffering with a heavy cold which
has kept him off the mound more than a
week, but ho reported In good trim on
Thursday and la ready to take his regu
lar turn on the mound.
Local fans are anxious to see Harper,
who Is said to have Improved wonder
fully. This youngster jins remarkable
natural pitching ability, but until this sea
son could not locate the plate, which made
his terrific speed and sharp breaking
curve ball of little value, Hq has shown
splendid form to date, and If he con
tinues at his present clip the Senators'
pennant chances aro greatly Improved.
If Harper has at last gained control,
tha Senators' pitching staff w make them
a factor for the first half or the season
at least, and with two men on the same
staff who can stand aa much work as the
youthful southpaw and the wonderful
Johnson, Washington may upset the dope.
If the other American League pitching
staffs do not show more than they have to
date.
Manager Griffith cut down his squad
again yesterday, when he released Glt
tlngs, young right-handed pitcher, to New
ark, of the International League. Glt
tlngs is a Washington semi-pro who has
shown great natural ability, but lacks experience.
