NEW YOHK, May G.
Tho record of tho day's transactions in the stock market will havo to tnko
ft placo as one of tho important events In Wall street's history. Tho publication
, of tho Gorman note came as a complete surprise nnd Its unfavorable construction
in tho early advices wfts looked upon as a disturbing influence of the highest
importance long before tho market opened. It was quickly demonstrated, how
ever, that this influence had long ago been discounted by tho cleaning up of
speculative lines at frequent intervals in tho last Ave months and by tho re
pression of a. buying power, tho force of which is far greater than Walt street
faintly comprehended.
At tho beginning of business declines ranging from 1 to more than C points
throughout the list wero sustained because of tho pressure of stocks from various
sources, reflecting fears on tho part of somo who are always troubled to tho
greatest extent by anjt unusual occurrence. It did not tako long, however, for
this supply to be absorbed, and during tho remainder of tho day Wall street,
meaning all tho financial, commercial and Industrial lntorcsts In touch with the
Btock Exchange, took a more favorable view of tho German message, and Instead
of further soiling there was a demand which increased steadily In vigor aVl
through tho rest of the day. ,
The range of prices may bo Indicated by the fact that Marino preferred,
which dropped 6 points at tho opening to 80, lato In the afternoon was back to
above 87, whllo declines of around 3 points In other stocks, like Industrial Alcohol,
were followed by advances of 6 or more points. Some issues on this upward
movement sold nt now high figures for tho year.
As tho market closed tho demand becamo moro urgent. Tho market was in
nn oversold condition long beforo the message was received and was in a still
mor oversold condition at tho end of tho day.
New York Banks Lose 812,411,000 on Currency Movement
NEW YOItK, May B. Tho reported movement of currency this week indi
cates a loss in cash by banks of $12,411,000. Tho gain from tho interior was
z.dz.uuut loss on auoireosury operations proper was $0,930,000. Federal Re
servo Bank had debit balances during tho week at tho Clearing Houso amounting
to $1,314,000. During tho same porlod Its credit balances aggregated $9,507,000,
'showing a loss by tho banks of $8,193,000. This made a net loss by the banks of
$12,411,000.
Central Aguirre Sugar noises Dividend
BOSTON, May G. Tho Central Agulrro Sugar Company declared a dlvl
dent of $10 on tho common stock, payable May IB to stock of record May 11. The
previous dividend was $0, declared on March 16.

CURB UNDISTURBED
BY GERMAN REPLY
Slight Declines at Start Are
Quickly Recovered Indus
trials in Good Demand
NEW YORK, May 6. Trading on the
Broad Street Curb was not seriously dis
turbed by tho publication of the German
note, probably because of the fact that
there are few margined accounts in that
market and with holdings in strong hands
there was no necessity for liquidation in
order to save balances.
There was a natural display of. weak
ness nt the start, but losses in that period
did not extend much beyond one point In
any of tho active Issues, and theso losses
were quickly regained. Many stocks re
flected a sold-out condition.
This applied particularly to Cuba Cane
Sugar and Mldvalo Steel. In' the last
named stock nearly all the selling on the
early decline was by bear traders and tho
belief prevailed that an extensive short
Interest has been' created In this stock.
trading interests concerned in trade
properties were buyers on whatevor re
cessions occurred and bids were advanced
as tn day progressed.
Chevrolnt yielded 3 points In the early
trading to 196, but quickly recovered this
loss and Submarine, after selling down
1 point to HYi, advanced to 38. Houston
OU yielded Vi to 17 U, followed by an ad
vanoe to 19, Ray-Ucroules held steady
at 4 & to 4 H and a firm tone was shown
In the United Verde Extension.
Aetna Explosives was active and strong
at the opening, moving up from 18 to 18 .
Lynn Phonograph and Zlno Concentrating
both shaded off fractionally at the start.
In the late trading a good demand was In
evidence all through the list and brisk ad
vances were in order.

Strikes Also Play Important Part in
Dry Goods Trade -
NEW YORK. May 5. In its weekly
review, the Dry Goods Economist says:
"Cessation of work, from strikes, and
the raising of cost of production by the
granting of higher wages have been im
portant features of the week. In the
leading cotton mill centres in Massachu
setts and Rhode Island a raise of 10 per
cent has been granted, and similar con
cessions have been made in other New
England centres. Strikes have occurred
in silk mills and in woolen mills at va
rious points. Of great. Importance, too.
are the developments In the coat, suit and
skirt Industry In New York and vicinity
"The complete shutting down of these
branches in and neav this city has Its
bearing on the fabric markets. There has
been some cancellation of orders for wool
and worsted fabrics by manufacturers of
coats, suits or skirts, who feel financially
unable to carry stock during the shut'
down, of their plants, wherever possible,
however, such concerns are holding on to
the materials they have and .allowing1 their
orders to stand, in view of the 'price ad
vances whlch'have occurred since the- pur
chases were paade."

COTTON RALLIES AFTER BIG
LOSSES WHEN MARKET OPENS
Belief Thnt German Note Was Unsat
isfactory Caused Decline
NEW YORK, May S. The only sub
ject of discussion on the Cotton Exchange
before the opening this morning was
tho reply from Germany on the subma
rine Issue, and It was the consensus of
opinion that the answer was unsatis
factory. This resulted In a wave of sell
ing at the start, which forced prices of
the nctlvo months down 15 to 21 points.
September waB 12 points lower. The
tone was weak, There was somo buy
ing of a good character at lower levels,
however. Timid longs sold out At the
start, and somo bears, who were caught
In tho recent sharp advances, openly
hammered the market.
After the call the buying Increased,
and although there was continued heavy
offerings, the demand finally absorbed
everything at the lower levels and forced
rallies of six to nine points before the
end of the first 15 minutes. Trading was
moro active than at any tlmo In two
years.
A spurt of trade buying In the early
afternoon carried prices back to within a
point or so of Thursday's finals. Tho
German note appeared to have lost its in
fluence as a bearish factor, and the
persistent demand from spot houscse led
many of the earlier sellers to replaco their
cotton. Spot markets were ofllclally re
ported unchanged to -He higher.
The week's movement Into sight toalled
117,388 bales, against 148.9S6 bates last
season. The movement into sight during
April totalled 570,330 bales, against
1,008,386 bales last year.
Exports of cotton for tho day were
12,055 bales, against 36,991 bales last
year. Today's shipments Included 11,572
bales for Great Britain nnd 483 bales
for tho Contlnont. Total clearances for
the season to date were 4,551,037 bales,
compared with 7,416,207 bales last season.
Receipts of cotton at the ports for the
day were estimated at 20,000 bales, com
pared with 22.092 bales last week, 29,
450 bales last year and 18,362 Dales In
1914.
