HAYDN CLUB
Women's Chorus From Oak Lane
Gives Successful Concert Downtown
Tho Haydn Club of Oak Lane is no
I stranger to music lovers from other scc
j tlons of the city. Long ago It had to
, feck larger nnd more central quarters as
direction of Gertrude llaydcn Fernlcy
ended Its 12th henson. which has been tho
most successful in its annals, with a de
lightful program In Horticultural Hall.
This engaged the talents of the club In
part songs and choral numbers by Bee
thoven, Mendelssohn, Grieg. Harris and
others nnd tho services of Mary Barrett,
soprano; Florence Adclc Wlghtman, harp
ist, and Ourney Mattox, violinist, as so
loists. The choral contributions were sung with
agreeable and voluminous tone, technical
etllclency and variety of mood In the In
tel pretntlon. One of the notablo features
was "Snowpcaked." a well-written lyric
by Karl Ueatty, who conducted.
Miss Harrott has a very line voice,
flexible, even In scalo nnd sweet In qual
ity, and she displayed Its several merits
to advantage In Morlz Moszliowskl's
"SprlngUdo of Love" nnd Clough-Dlter's
"My Lover Comes on a Ski."
Miss Wlghtma: who Is niready a mu
sician of vnrie accomplishments, al
though only a si' of a girl, has mado a
number or suocc sful appearances this
teason, but nt nono of them was her solo
work so spirited and finished ns last night
at the Haydn concert. She fairly as
tounded the audience with tho facility
with which her lingers traversed the
strings and with tho ravishing cnVcis they
created.
Gurney Mattox also proved himself a
"wunderklnd" nnd something more. His
bowing wus proficient nnd lie produced a
tone that was rounded and full and of
considerable volume. It also had the
merit of ai-curnto Intonation. The young
ster's version of Hubny's arrangement of
Bizet's "Fantasle" was brilliant. With
Miss Wlghtman ho was also heard in
duets.
Miss Fcrnley doscrves great credit for
tho excellent results she has attained with
her forces. Wllllnm Sllvano Thunder was
tho efliclent accompanist of both 'chorus
and soloists.
