When Israel Zanirwlll wrote "The Mo-M
ment Dofore," the love of Impossible mtl.1
odrnma wns otronir on the publld and
ZnnrTwlil nearly made a plea for popular '
npproval. There aro few stories more Im.
possible or preposterous, yet more thrill.
Ine and Intense, than this play which ths
Famous Flayers have filmed nnd which v
will be released on tho Paramount pro-j
gram nnd shown this weok at the Stan.
ley Thentre.
It tells tho story of a gipsy girl, who,J
nfter n Btormy nnd adventurous life, '
finally becomes tho Dnchess of Maldon.
It Is n wholly Impossible sort of tale, but
tun 01 action ana melodramatic thrills.
Pauline Frederick, tho beautiful star
who has acquired a reputation for het
luxury-loving courtesans of the screen,
ndds a now type to her characterizations,
As a. gipsy, Bhe Is a rough common type,
not ttnlllco tho famous Carmen ot Olga
Kcthersolo. She Is fierce, Impetuous an!
wilful, yet magnetic and beautiful In a
wild, uncouth way. It Is a fine piece of
character work. As the Duchess she li
the nrlstocrat to her finger tips, a charm
ing, distinguished woman of the world.
Tho only criticism possible of her work
Is whether sho does not maite the con
trast almost too great. One wonders if
a. glpny maid could develop Into the
grande damo so completely.
But, again, as so often with the Para-j
mount pictures, It Is tho wonderful pho
tography nnd attention to detail that l
the outstanding feature. Tho beautiful t
silhouette scenes in tho forest in the 1
closing reel are nmong tho most artlslta
lilts ot work yet dono in tho photoplay.
