usual hospitality. I noted Mrs. lSlddle,
of course, present. Whnt .a splendid
holpmato slit Is to her lino husband!
There Is not a UiIiik In which ho Is In
terested that she Is not Interested, too!
and she was so fond of society when sho
first camo hero as a young bride. Sho
Is quite a stillclng example of what a
wife should be. Other women who were
present nnd who gave their attention to
the really fine spcechesi were Mrs.
Ocorgo W. Chllds Drcxct, Mrs. Holllster
Sturgcs, fMrs. Allan II. llaFrls, Mrs.

' It wns frlrflitftlllv- nxnltlni? nt thn
Mask and Wig, you lenow, because I
simply had to And out who the man
was I saw being fitted In, a Chestnut
street store last week. It was a scream,
my dears, as I went Into ono llttlng
room, the door of tho next was
ajar, and thero stood a creature with
short hair, neatly parted, and pedal
extremities not of the smallest,, bolng
fitted Into n frock of white crepo
de chine made with an accordion-pleated
skirt and Russian blouse, the peplum of
the blouso helng edged with stripes of
rainbow silk. Woll, when "Ann Ha
laam's" friends began to arrive In tho
first act suddenly I saw tho frock and
said, "Thero ho Is!" but alas! how could
one bo sure? For ho kept coming In
until thero wero six. of him, nnd all with
white shoes and high heels and such
splendiferous wigs topped with green
straw hats and widespread wings of
green. Tho shoes looked small, and as
for the ankles, they wcro slimmer than
many it rcn,l girl's, and then with yellow,
brown and even red wigs It was Impos
sible to tell If It had been Jack Carpen
ter, Clmrllo Sorvlco, A. H. Wolsbach, C.
M. King, A. M. Nord or H. J. Hayden.
Most of nil I liked the donkey, though,
for Phoebo proved to bo neither maid
nor horse, "Jest a plain, pesky, onerous
ole mule," but such a beautiful ono and
with so charming u voice. I thought
dreamily of the verso:
"Sweetly sings tho donkey a3 ho goes to
grass.
Ho can sing no better, becnuso no's such
an ass.
He haw, lie haw, he haw, haw, haw,
haw, haw I"
