EATON SEES "THE MERRY
WIVES OF WINDSOR"
Continued from 1'nxe One
Wise took the part on very short notice,
coming from Al Woods' production of
"Tho Song of Songs" In an Interview
the other day ho said he wasn't yet at
home, for It was "omo Jump from Al
Woods to Shakespeare." But in his per
formance ho files no sign of being HI
at easo. Of course. Nature made him
up for tho role, gave him tno figure, tho
voice, tho unction. It Is this ultimate
unction which an actor must have, or
he might as well give up the part. Some
actors ln thh role are funny without
being vulgar, more are vulgar without
being funny; but Falstaff must bo both,
and tc make him both the nctor must
be at onco a good Impersonator and a
man whom Nature has mado richly and
fatly humorous. Wise Is a human being,
not an actor with a blown belly, recit
ing lines. His most brtlltunt companion
In the cast Is Miss Crosman. Her spir
its are unflagging, her speech a model
of clarity, her whole performance a de
light. And, on the whole, the rest of the
cast, which Includes many "old-timers,"
measures up to the demands Artemus
Ward said: "I have stood at the grave
of Shakespeare. It Is a success." We
may now add, so Is his play.
