By the time that this report is submitted to the shareholders this balance will be reduced to about $5,500,000.00, by the payment of the January divi dend and the consummation of a transaction upon which we were engaged for several months prior to December 31st, resulting in an investment by us of $5,400,000.00 in the Bonds of tho Northern Indiana Gas nnd Electric Company (in which we are very largely interested as a share holder) to enable that Company to purchase the properties of the Indiana. Lighting Company, General Service Company, Lima Gas Light Company, and'an interest in the Capital Stock of the Peru Gas Company. These Companies are doing the gas business in Fort Wayne, BJuff ton, Decatur, LoganBport, Wabash, Frankfort, Lebanon, LaFayette, Craw- ' fordsville, and Peru, Indiana, and in Lima, Ohio. For advances to and the purchase of securities of other1 Companies in which we are interested, to provide for the extension and improvement of their plants, we will be called upon to furnish during 1916 about $10,000,000.00. Provision has been made to meet these requirements. While many large public service corporations were compelled during 1914, and a part of 1915, to reduce, and in some cases to entirely suspend, 'dividends, because of inability to secure cash for necessary extensions and improvements from any source except Net Earnings, The UnitW Gas Improvement Company and the Companies in which it is. interested,, have been able to perform their full public duty, in maintaining, extend ing and efficiently operating their plants, without change in their regular dividend rate. This was largely due to the conservative policy of previous years in accumulating out of Undivided Profits and Investing in the business a fund, the income from which can be drawn upon to. furnish a portion of the capital needed for such extension and im provement of the properties of the Companies in which, we are inter ested, as are absolutely essential if they are to cover their field of activity to the satisfaction of the public,, proper service to whom ia the prime reason for their existence. This satisfactory report has been made possible not only by the finaa- cial policy above referred to, but -because the employes of The United Gas Improvement Company and of the Companies in which The United, Gas Improvement Company ia a shareholder, constitute un organization with no superior in integrity and efficiency and In loyalty to one another, to the public and to their employers.
