I I HIM I - STAR STOCKS UNDER PRESSURE; . , d More interest in railroads JMhgf of Specialties Attributed to Obstacles Placed in ? Way of Deliveries More Believers That Readjust 'inertt of Reading Capitalization Is Near at Hand . - s NEW YOnK, April 18. JsJa-rkftt movements -were divided from the opening today, with some of the .Ml Witir Blocks Under continued pressure, while Increased Interest was shown fB lllny railroad Issues and the important standard Industrials. r "toMwIli Locomotive, Industrial Alcohol and Westlnghouse were the weakest '.sjiteMWCB, with selling of those stocks directly attributed to obstacles placed In lite wy Of deliveries. It Is no longer stated, however, that the Interruption to 'SJtmtfrilahce with contracts Is duo to any Insufficiency on the part of tho Amer fcnH manufacturers, but muen Is heard on the Street about the position .taken by JUimtan Government Inspectors, and there are strong Intimations that good rea sons exist for a desire to treat directly with the Russian Government on all future arrangements. Bethlehem, In tho afternoon, dropped 22 $4 points, Wall Street os an element, however, Is more disposed to tako a position on railroad Issues, putting Reading In nrst place as a speculative proposition. Th understanding that a readjustment of capitalization In Reading Is close at kd fs finding- moro believers, and was a basis for the buying of that stock, itch forced Its prlco up more than one point In tho morning session. Other Hroad stocks are In scant supply, but buying is stilt restricted becauso of uncertainty over tho labor" outlook. There Is always a good' Investment demand lor stocks like St Paul, Union Kiclflc, New York Central and Pennsylvania. And tho Issues have almost entirely disappeared from tho Street. 1 Tho Marine earning statement, published this morning, furnished a strong iicenttvq for buying of both the preferred and common stocks and those Issues 'wioved independently of the rest, of the list. A good part of this buying seems to come from Standard Oil sources and City Bank Interests and It should occasion rt surprise If control of the company should ho found to have been transferred to those quarters. "Wall Street Is still talking of the international situation, nnd In the lobby rf tho Stock Exchange there Is a general Impression that a rupture with Ger many must come. Until tho position of the Administration nnd Its Intended action Is definitely Known It Is not expected that there can be a sustained movement In cither direc tion. A mojorlty of Important Interests hero believe that even If a diplomatic rupturo should come tho market will advanco simply as a result of tho relief from tension which has held trading In check over since tho Sussex disaster.
