Police Court Chronicles
A negro, full of pitch, a wobbly cart
nnd a balky horso was tho combination
which confronted Policeman Byers. Tho
negro, who said his namo was George
Oross. was working on tho roof of a .house
In Baynton street, Oerm.intown. Down In
the street two other mgroes wero stir
ring n tank of pitch Tho horso and cart
woro standing nenrby.
tticry time that dross wanted moro
pitch the men nt tho tank attached a
bucketful to a rope, and the negro on the
roof pulled it up. But, unfortunately, the
men who were working below had their
attention divided At short lnterals ono
of them went off with a can, and they
went 50-50 on sharing its contents.
Finally they had considerable trouble
In attaching tho bucket to the ropo, for
tho vision of each grow decidedly cloudy.
Gross had plenty of reason to bo dis
pleased, lie was Ignored In tho dividends
of tho can and became Impatient whon
half the pitch was spilled on Its way up
ward. He leaned over to express his
opinion of tho men below when suddenly
ho lost his balance nnd slid off tho roof.
He collided with the dangling pitch bucket
on his way down and was bathed In pitch
from head to foot. He landed In tho cart,
which was half filled with gravel. The
other two negroes started to run when
Gross began to descend, and It's possible
that they're running yet.
The horse ran eff with the tar-stalned
negro and his yells attracted the cop.
He thought Gross was stealing the team
and jumped on the cart to stop him. But
the negro was full of fight and. he and
Byers made tho gravel fly some before
Gross was finally overcome.
The cop drove the prisoner to tho Ger
mantown police station. Fortunately, tho
pitch was only lukewarm, and when Gross
was separated from It he was only slightly
singed.
Magistrate Pennock decided that Gross
had enough trouble for ono afternoon and
let him go.
"'Deed am fanltful eben fo' dat," said
dross.

The PUBLIC LEDGER is a clean newspaper. It
has character and can be read with freedom by. boys and
girls. It stands as a protest against that journalism which
flaunts the details of crime and social disorder in the face
of youth and decency. Taste is a habit, and habits are
acquired early in life. A newspaper that retails, unwhole
some things under the guise of "news" is impairing the
taste and creating a morbid appetite for a kind of reading
e matter that disgraces the profession of journalism.
The PUBLIC LEDGER aims to keep clean all
over in its advertising as well as in its news and editorial
columns. It does not and will not publish improper
advertisements, details of crime or scandal, nor trivialities
for the unthinking.
