tit the homo of Mr. and Mrs. George W.
Childs Drexel to discuss further the
carrying out of tho plans for national

self Is nmong the foremost of tho women
Interested In this movement. Sho has
always been an enthusiastic supporter
of her nephew, Tony Piddle, nnd Tony,
you know, was one of tho first men to
take the Initiative toward tho general
movement for preparedness for what
may como.
Mrs. Drexel has placed her city house
at tho disposal of tho chairmen of these
different committees all through tho
spring and summer, If they dcslro to
meat there. Sho Is a woman of strong
convictions nnd In her quiet way lives
up to those convictions with great
thoroughness,
Tho meeting this morning wab called
at 10 o'clock, nnd after the business of
tho sections was finished, Mrs, Drexel
entertained her guests and fellow
workers at luncheon.
Tho Secoura Duryca Is doing very
wonderful work. Tho members meet
every Thursday morning at Mrs. Joo
DuBarry's, and sow, as you know, but
now I henr they are making a special
plea for sccond-hanC clothing, which
Miss Nnnoy Coleman will receive at 709

of tho Dramatic Association nttnehed
to St. Joseph's College, an institution
conducted in this city by the Jesuit
Fathers. Tho dramatic association has
had very wonderful success In tho
various plays which have been staged
In earlier years, but this is its first
undertaking of such proportions. Judg
ing from tho dress rehearsal there Is no
doubt of its success and of the erfect
upon tho audience, whjch cannot but
bo greatly Impressed nt tho reverent
handling of tho greatest tragedy of tho
world. There is nothing to offend
tho moat sacred feeling, ns neither

The nctors are exceedingly well trained
and the scenery and color schemo of
tho costumes are very nrtlstlc.

"THE PAGODA
Burmese Story in Song,
Given for First Time in
of Music Club at
THE Slatlnee Sluslcnl Club members
will glvo n delightful afternoon In tfio
Rose Gardens of the Bellevue-Stratford
today, when "The Pagoda of Flowers," a
Burmese story In song, will be sung. Tho
story was written by John Frederick
Fraser and has been set to musla by Amy
Woodforde-FInden. This afternoon's will
bo the Initial performance In the United
States, In costume nnd with stnge setting.
The argument of ths song story Is as
follows: Preceding the events explained
by tho lyrics Oomala, a young Burmese,
betrothed of Ma- Noo, filled with religious
fervor, nnd In bis heart resolved to bo
come a Poongyl (Buddhist priest), has bid
den Sla Noo n sudden, strnngo farewell,
that only half revealed his full Intention,
The innrrlnge day passes. Oomala does
not come to claim his bride. Deserted nnd
desperate, Sla. Noo, unwilling to accept
the rumored truth, seta forth on a pilgrim
age, prajlng that her beloved may bo
restored to her.
The action of tho story passes upon
the grounds of what Is Intended to rep
resent tho famous Shwo Dngon Pagoda
hi Itangoon.
It Is morning and tho people come In
gay costumes to offer prayers before the
clllgles of Buddha, nnd. later, depart to
celebrate with danco and song tho merry
holiday.
The happiness of Sla atec. the little
flower maiden, nnd tho songs sung by
her and Chit Maung, her boy lover, are
In contrast to tho despairing noto of Sla
Noo, In whoso secret heart there lingers
little hope of answer to her oft-Bald pray
ers1. The pilgrims having all departed from
tho shrines, Oomala Is now seen leav
ing tho pagoda with a procession of
priests. He drops unobserved from them,
nnd remains nlone to brood nnd meditate.
Thus, while Oomaln Is engaged in prayer
and "meditation, Sla Noo returns and finds
her lover. Blind in her happiness at find
ing him again, sho does not grasp at
first the cruel truth, and, fearful of dis
turbing his meditations, cautiously makes
her way to tho "Pagoda of Flowers,"
whore sho awaits him. He finishes, where
upon she eagerly ndvnnce.s to him. Rec
ognizing her, he turns again to Buddha
for strength to forget her. and finally re
tires to the temple for prayer. He bars
the sacred door. Sla Noo vainly tries .to
force It, and, In desperation, goes to the
window, where she discovers that his
robes are thoso of n Pyln-SIn monk and
that he Is lost to her.
Itesolvetl to end her misery, Sta Noo
bids a last farewell, and seizes a dagger
(called "dab"), and Is about to end her
unhappy life, when Oomala. emerging,
seeing what she Is about to do, wrests
the "dah" from her grasp. Tho man In
him Is stronger than the priest, and
triumphant love nt last Is conqueror.
Oamala divests himself of his priestly
gown, nnd together the lovers, cloaked
In the twilight mist, steal from the
pagoda and fly hand In hand to tho far
distant rlco Holds of the north, where
once they parted by the Star-Flower tree.
