being sold by young women In Chlneso
costume, nnd tho window decorations
also suggest tho Far East.
Tho story of "Tho Yellow Jacket" Is
as old an the hills and as young ns
(springtime. It Is a play without
sconcry, but ns tho lecturer says, "its
econcry Is ns big ns ycur Imagination,"
and ho Initiates his hearers into the
mysteries nnd humors of tho Chlneso
written language by means of crnyon
drawings. Among tho women of social
promlnenco who will net ns pationcsscs
for "Tho Yellow Jacket" aro Mrs.
Gcorgo A. Dunning, Mrs. Joseph M.

Thoro Is a great romanco about brass
buttons and tho warriors who wear
them: In fact, somo of tho fjIrU find
them qulto Irresistible It la thereforo
not astonishing to hear a charming
maiden talk about her "lonely sol
dlcr" theso days nnd wish ho would
sond her his photograph. Thnt was what
I heard nt a luncheon recently, and
really her cheoks grow pink and her
eyes shono with cxcltcmont ns sho
talked about him. Tho Idea Is to writo
to tho soldier boys who havo no near
and dear ones at homo to cheer them
in tho awful hours In tho trenches. Ho
sides writing to him, you send him
cigars nnd cigarettes and handker
chiefs nnd warm scarfs and nulnlno
pills, nnd ono I know of thoughtfully
ndded a toothbrush to her iiacket for
"Somowhero in Franco," for her "Lone
ly Soldier" had said thnt receiving a
lotter from her wns as good as having
a wholo now toothbrush. That gives us
nn Idea of tho many so-called small
trials theso good mon, bravo and true,
havo to undergo. But beforo you start
this writing to him, you know, you go
to got his namo from a placo In Now
York and you havo to solemnly swear
thnt you nro no Insinuating, nsplrlng
femalo on tho job for a husband, for ns
the clerk tells you, "This is no matri
monial bureau." What a blow to some,
for, as I told you, thcro Is a woiid of
romanco about bmss buttons and war.

Philomusian Members Plan to
Build Houses for Little
Comers From the South
Unllko tho majority of charitable move
ments, the Philomusian Club has decided
upon one that will provide homes nnd even
maintenance without any questions, char
acter analysis, psychological examination
or nny of tho other embarrassments so
often Imposed. Tho new plan Is to bo
tried out on Immigrant birds, who nro
dally arriving here from the South, and
who, being unacquainted with tho city,
might nnd It difficult to locate In desira
ble dwelling sections. As tho city does
not boast of a broker in birds' homey, nnd
ns no lists nro published of available
abodes, tho Philomusian women hnvo de
cided that cozy bungalows, npartment
houses, two nnd three-story dwellings, du
plex houses nil mlnlaturo counterparts of
tho homes of humans will bo placed at
tho disposal of the strangers, nnd that
every Inducement In tho way of furnlsh
ment nnd scrvlco will bo placed at their
command gratis.
Speclnl caro has been taken to sea that
tho homes will lit tho requirements of
every species that arrives. Whether tho
finch bo moro fastidious than tho thrush,
or tho wren moro exacting than tho jay, it
is certain that all will find something
"that Just suits" In tho vast nrrny of
homes being erected In West Philadel
phia. No board will govern any of these
Institutions, thero will bo no rules or
regulations ; restrictions of nny sort will
bo unknown In tho plan ndopted.
