MOON MAKES MISTAKE
IN COLUMBUS PAINTING
Didn't Shine as Sh6wn in Dis
covery ot America at Con
gress Hall Exhibit
And now tho moon Is "In wrong."
For there was no full moon shlntng
down on the Plnta, the Nina and the
Banta Mnrla, Columbus' caravels, out at
sea the night before the low-tying ehora
of a new continent was discovered
through the morning mist. Astronomical
records prove It.
Tho discovery of this historical fact
came to light nt the exhibition of his
torical pictures In Congress Hall, where
there Is one painting which depicts that
dramatic evening. A full moon Is rising
above tho eastern horizon and tho re
flection of the setting sun tnt.i the sails
of Columbus' flagship. It Is very Impres
sive t but nn nrt lover with nn nstrono
mlrril turn ot mind doubted the au
thenticity of the moon.
"Tho critic of the painting Is right,"
replied Dr. Erlo Dopllttle, professor of
astronomy at the university of Penn
sylvania, when appealed to. "The moon
on October 11, 1492, did not rise until
10 o'clock and then It was midway be
tween a full moon and a half moon."
The exhibition, which wna scheduled
to close June 20, will be continued until
after tho end of the Associated Advertis
ing Clubs of the World convention, June
2f, to 30, on tho request of tho Poor
Richard Club, and perhnps until tho Na
tional Fourth of July Celebration here.
