the Cafe den Deux Maitots. Place St. Oer-matn-des-Pres,
Pari. Time, 1012.
So this Is Fnrls t
Tea, yes. Tho plnco where "John
Darras" come from. Tho plnco where "6
Hue street, Benolt." Is to be found. Tho
place where they sprlntr that student
stuff! "Wlint a night I" "What a head I"
"How do you feel?" "I feet like Honrl
tookHl" Abovo all. tho place whero tho
yoling-man-In-Iovo-wlth-hls-nrt writes ono
of those suppressed masterpieces of comlo
opera which always turn out to bo even
worse than tho kind tho manners produce.
That Is Paris and that Is "Como to
Bohemia" or most of It.
There Is no denying that somo of tho
Jokes In tho new piece at tho Forrest aro
well turned! Just as there Is no denying
the presence of "He's got tho pip," and
"Why send to Africa for Ivory?" both In
about weakest third act In recent memory.
It Is likewise that labor known us supcr
rerogatlon to contraveno tho fact that
FrlU Williams and Alice liegeman can
be funny when they havo something to bo
funny over! that Dcnman Malcy has a
bit of tho Tlnnoy nccont; that Muriel
Jludsrin Is high spirited and good Bport
enough to laugh at her own dnnclng ; that
Snlsie Irving has a good voice, a cultl
vatcd enunciation and a. pleasant way,
that some would have liked to sco a little
moro of Thyra von Ulm, who appeared
briefly as Venus; that tho costumes wcro
striking In a Bakstlan manner and good
to look at; that somo peoplo found con
Bldcrablo Interest In tho puzzle nnent tho
dancers. Week and Nice which Is nice?
nolthor and that a largo audlcnco clapped
enthusiastically. But they clapped in that
depresstngly personal manner which sig
nified that tho society of friends wcro
present.
As for tho score. If It had been a Her
bert It would have carried tho rest; for
much of tho "book" Is no worso than
dozens' or others. But Mr. Murchison's
score Isn't likely to keep tho composer of
"Tho Only Qlrl" sitting up nights. It
haa catchy tunes: but they'vo been
caught already by other music mon.
Some you can place llko "Stlcktlte,"
which Is largely "Women" from "Tho
Merry Widow." Somo you can't. "Deep
In tho Heart" U ono of these. And there
Is ono song, "Tho Vnmplre," that might
bq a humorous hit If It was Illustrated
with a screen satlro on the eternal Theda.
Altogether, the Forrest supplies very
few reasons for coming to Bohemia.

"DAMAGED GOODS" RETURNS
TO THE WALNUT ONCE MORE
Familiar and Powerful Drama by
Brieux in Town Again
At this lato day there Is very llttlo to
say about "Damaged Goods," certainly
nothing now. It is still a powerful and
salutary drama, with neither pity nor
prudery In It. It deals with Its subject
matter openly, fearlessly and honestly It
Is n play Quito as much as It Is a preach
ment. And It has returned to tho Walnut
for what may be tho fifth or sixth time.
No play could have been named 10 years
ago which seemed less likely of produc
tion, let alono success, on the American
stage. No play of tho last few years has
kopt moro steadily In tho public eye. It
Is, therefore, a Just tribute to Richard
Bennett that his name still is given a
place on tho program.
Knickerbocker Gives 'The Thief
"The. Thief," Henri Bernstein's Inter
esting 'drama, la being presented In an
admirable, manner by tho Knickerbocker
Tlayers. .The dramatic story. In which
a woman resorts to stealing In order to
secure finery to beautify herself In tho
eyes of hor husband, Is well known, but it
is rarely that a Btock company Interprets
tho piece ho well.
John Warner as the young husband
and Emily Smiley as tho wife wero seen
to a decided advantage, holding tho au
dience nigh breathless in the boudoir
Bcene where the wife Is discovered as tho
thief. Earl Western as Fernand La
gardes, the youth who poses as a thief
to shield the wife, was all that could bo
asked, while Philip Lord and Josle Slsson
as 'Raymond and Isabella Lagardes, his
parents. Are also good. The play was
well Btaged.,
Grace George Comedy at American
"A; Woman's Way," Thompson Bu
chanan's comedy of domestic life, In which
Grace George scored such a success, was
presented last night at the American
Theatre by the Oeorge Arvlne Players.
The story has to do with a young
wife who cures her husband's affection for
another woman by bringing him to realize
Her own worth. Ituth Robinson por
trayed the part of Marlon Stanton, the
wife, and Richard La Salle was seen as
Howard Stanton, tho husband. Marie
Warren was cast as Mrs. Blakemore, "the
woman." The character parts of Mrs.
Stanton and Mrs. Livingston were ca
pably handled by Ada Prince and Hen
rietta Vaders. The remainder of the cast
Included Harry Wllgus, Russell Snoad,
Thomas Shearer, Sammy Lynch, Frank
Rusaell and Virginia Mannings.
Bobby Heath Nixon Grand
Bobby Heath la back again. Which was
sufficient In itself to bring Joy to the
patrons of the Nixon Grand last night.
When the popular Philadelphia songster
started a week'B. engagement at the up
town house and delighted the crowded
house with his unusually clever songs and
chatter Much credit Is due to Lester
Jefferies, of Narberth, Pa., who presented
the act and who took especial care to see
that no details were slighted.
Saljle Fields assisted Heath In the act
and scored a success In her own line.
This offering' overshadowed the rest on
tho bill, despite the other strong numbers,
which included Mr. and Mrs, George Alli
son. Four Gordon Highlanders, Tom GIN
JiXk Pfl and Hazel Mann, and Rio and
.worman,
