It costs the average nine-hole course in Philadelphia between $2000 and $4000
a year to care for its fairways and greens and the amount spent by the IS-hole
courses runs from $5000 to $15,000 a year. There are hundreds of ncres owned
or leased by the local golf clubs which are valued at from $1000 nn aero up to
$10,000. The seed bills of these clubs run Into the thousands of dollars. The 30
odd professionals earn from $1000 a year up tp $6000.
Spend Vast Sums on Golf
Phlladelphlans spend every year a small fortune on golf balls, which average
in price from 40 cents up to 75. The amount spent annually by Philadelphia
golfers for carfare to their golf courses would keep you and your family on easy
street for the rest of your life. There nre 30,000 golfers In Philadelphia, and
fully half of them will buy one new club a year, and this means an expenditure
of more than $30,000 annually. There nre more than a thousand boys who caddie
for Phlladelphlans, and from Hay until November these youngsters on S'atutdays
and Sundays will each earn a dollar bill, and in the season these thousand young
sters will take out of the golfers' pockets and put into theirs the very comfortable
sum of $20,000,
