SOCIETY Is Interested In the enter
tainment for St. Nicholas' Day Nur
sery which will ho given at HortlctiUu
ml Mall today. A ntimlicr of women
have taken card tables for the after
noon, and the evening from 9 o'clock
on will bo devoted to dancing. After
this affair there will be very little more
entertaining while Lent Is with us, ns
With the mpro solemn weeks of that
season coming closer. If any entertain
ing Is done It Is onlv of an Informal
kind and hardly spoken of.
Today's nffalr will doubtless be very
successful, na a number of prominent
women nro Interested In the day nur
sery. It's for tho small colored kiddles,
you know, and they nro too cunning
for words. If you stop In there to see
them, all spandy, clean mid hnppy and
interested In their llttlo games: and
then tho wee mites In lone clothes, you
want to slay and ptay with them. Mrs.

These supper club dances, which were
Inaugurated by Mrs. Scott this year,
have pioved to be among the most pop
ular affairs of the season. They nro de
lightfully Infotmal and exclusive as
well, nnd so many people go. On Satur
day night thero were nearly 300 there
and It was quite delightful. The Meyer
Davis Orchestra was on the tapis, or the
Btagt rather, for they played thcVe In
stead of on tho Iloor. And they nre
splendid.
Miss Grace Field, of New York, gave
four exhibition dances with great skill,
glio was extremely graceful and light ns
a feather, and did tho skntlng waltz
gowned In the cutest white frock, with
collar, ton.u,o and tiny muff of ermine.
The management has shown decided
tact In tho choice of artists for the vari
ous meetings of tho club, teach ilancor
has been totally different from those bo
fore. It Is delightful to know that an
extra dance Is to bo given by tho man
agement on Apt 11 20 for the members
of both series. That night will s?o the
last performance of tho Mask nnd Wig
plny, so there will piobably be numerous
box parties to go over to the supper club
afterward.
Some umong those there on Saturday
night were Mr. nnd Mrs. lllllle Warden.
Who were chaperoning Agnes llrocklo'.s

Wore her wedding dress, and Gabrlella
Hopklnson, with her fiance, was enter

OPEN SUNDAY PLAYGROUNDS
imED BY SOCIAL WORKERS
Closed Recreation Centres Drive Peo
ple to Mischief, They Say
The opening of the Fourth National
Flower Show on Sunday has aroused com
ment In many sections of the city. No
locality, however. Is more Interested than
tho congested district of tho 3d Ward,
South Philadelphia, where Sunday, In
stead of being a day of peace and rest,
Is one of turmoil, according to settle
ment workers, who dcclnro that "mischief
finds work for Idle hands to do," nnd ad
vocnte the opening of the public play
grounds except during hours of church
services.
"Philadelphia should havo supervised
Sunday recreation," said John Grolle,
director of the Settlement Sluslc School,
427 Christian street, when telling of tho
difficulties of managing tho peoplo of con
gested districts on Sundays. "The public
playgrounds should bo opened on Sundays.
I do not mean that this should Interfere
vlth the church hours. But I do mean
that somo place should bo open for the
peoplo who havo nowhere to go Sunday
afternoon for rccrcntlon except the streets.
The largo parks nro too fnr away. What
the peoplo want Is a place near their
own homes such a placo as Is provided
by tho playgrounds, which aro closed on
Sundas. There should bo supervised
recreation In these places on Sundays.
Tho Sunday afternoon problem Is one o'f
tho greatest the settlement worker has tn
meet. The settlements, many of whlcji
aro open, cannot possibly tnke care of
nil the people. Tho only way Is to open
the playgrounds nnd have supervised play
there."
