"TTSF"-- 'T"g, I m F &J MontejCrupen CHAPTER XIU Continued BY NOW the station was reached and the communicative chauffeur had an other V from which to amputate a fat tip. On the rnllrontl platform, .Monto soon found the blue-coated, braes-buttoned of ficial In charge. "It Is that package left by the taxlcab driver, I am asking about?" said Monte. "But Its gone on the 1:14 train for New York," said tho railroad official. "The Pullman porter of Car B came to me nnd got It. Saw liiin go up Inside tho coach nnd hand It to the lady herself." Monte pulled out his watch. It was 2:35 p. m. "Kriow the porter's name?" j "Yes, It was Bam," was the reply. "Been on this division for ten years. Uo In as honest as the day's long. He told me tho lady had sent him for tho package. I held It up at the window, nnd the lady nodded. I tell you she was a hummer." "Never mind that," said Monte ex citedly, possessed at an idea. "What time does that train reach New York?" "Threo o'clock," said tho railroad of ficial, if. It's Important " "do ahead." "If It's very Important run over to the station master's ofllco and get the Man hattan Transfer station on the long-dls-tnnco telephone. Tho 1 o'clock train gets thore at 2:41. Five minutes lay up to hook on nn electric engine. That's right. Down those stairs, through the subway tunnel, and up Into tho statlqn " But Monto had outsped his Instructions, and a courteous station master soon had the colored porter on the wire. Monto snatched nt the receiver. "Is that Sam; porter Pullman Car B?" "Dat's me." "Did you deliver a. -shoebox to a pas senger In your car nt N,orth Philadel phia?" "Deed I did, boss. But tho lady and her maid dono get off tho train at Tren ton, moro than nn hour ago." "Tho devil you say," shouted Monte. "Dcscrlbo the lady, never mind tho maid. Be quick 1" "She was a foreign person with a right mart pair of black eyes. There waa a Z. S.' on her handbag, boss, causo I dono pick It up for her. Got to go, boss ; train's pulling out." "Initials Z. S.," muttered Monte, "Zoda Slgvay The Countess! By thunder I" "Crooks?" asked the smiling station agent. "Not exactly," replied Monto as he hung .up. "I call them rattling clever peo ple. What's the damage?" "Not a cent to you," was tho roply. "Wo always help out our prominent patrons." And ns ho gavo Monte tho once-over J again he added: "We know our people when they drop in." "Thore are times when it Is well to have good tailor," thought Monte as he climbed to the westbound platform to cntch'the next' local Into Broad street after sending this wire to Craig Andrews; Come tonight to my study. CHAPTER XIV Sympathetic Ink GOINa to tho huge fireplace In his study Monte Crlspen selected a plump, likely log from a brass woodraclc and tossed it Into the dying embers of tho grate; the log crackled and reflected a drowsy light over the whole room; his ds instinctively pulled their chairs up fire, for the night outside was chill. On this evening tho company Included some old friends. Craig Andrews, the astute lawyer, taciturn as ever; Agent W., of the Secret Service, unexpected, yet most welcome. With Blnns, an expert International code reader, he had rushed over from New York, whose frightened pop eyes and.thin hair gave him the look of a singed cat. "Before we start trying to decode the cryptic cross, what Is the conclusion you draw from what I have Just told you of the vanishing shoebox?" asked Monte of the grave-faced Government official, whom Andrews had sent for. 'It is obvious that the Slgvay gang has developed Into a two-ring crime circus," as the- reflective reply. "Then you think members of the Slgvay gang stole their grotaergebot's portman teau, and are peddling Its contents?" asked Andrews. "Undoubtedly the case," replied Agent W., .with grim certainty. For a whole month past Agent W. had been engrossed In nn attompt to get a lead as to the wherenbouts of Herr Hochmolster. The police of a hundred cities were on tho closo watch for tho nrch plotter, but handicapped by the ab sence of even a photograph of ajman who presumably received the ready assistance of misguided, non-patrlotio citizens, they had been of no help whatever to the Fed eral authorities. "How about Lumley, the Voice of tho People?" questioned Andrews. "He seemed such a good lead, nsldo from his egotism." "That man is dying, an Incurable dis ease," replied the Secret Service agent. "I doubt If ho will last out his utility to us as a 'stool pigeon' de luxe. The Slgvay gang knew when to toBS him over, and It is precious little he knows of them at that. He has tried to make good, yet he Is only a writer person. Like most of that class, he exudes ideas by tho score, and falls lamentably when It comes to a single prac tical result. Wo have supplied him with funds and keep him circling around the big hotols of Now York, Chicago, Cleve land, and other cities, always under close surveillance. He has been unable to con nect up with Hochmolster or that gentle man's fascinating niece." Agent W. lowered his voice to a whisper as ho added, "Beside the poor simp Is still love-sick over the Countess Zoda, and I question his loyalty to us tho moment he passes under her subtle, per fumed Influence." "Are you sure the Countess is Hoch melstor's niece?" questioned Monte fev erishly. "We nre never suro of anything theso days. She has to be somebody's niece. Why not Hochmelstcr's? I have had tho Immigration records searched for months back, nnd wo cannot find a cluo as to when either she or ho got Into the country. Tho Ambassadors of three European countries flatly repudiate thoy are diplo mats, you know and Impetuously deny that he has official' connection, direct or Indirect, with their home governments." "Don't look bo at mo," begged Monte. "I am cured. You must know I gavo my word of honor In the shoebox affair. Then I never dreamed that she was Implicated until tho Pullman porter described her." "There you are honor! That's a qual ity crooks lnovltably count on their vic tim's possessing," testily grumbled the Government man. "They have nono of It themselves. Cheer up, youngster! We would have fared no better thnn you did, probably not as well. "You amaze me," said Andrews. "At any rale we have definitely uncovered another member of the gang, and Inci dentally discovered It is a house divided against Itself." "Exactly," said Agent W., "and that Is something of an accomplishment In Itself for a volunteer Investigator. I should soy that this dark-bearded, man Is an international blackmailer by profes sion, a past-master at vending stolen goods In the great fear market of the world, Those who buy letters of a blackmailer usually fear exposure, do they not? This time tho trade was In something else, but tho method of delivery and receipt was that practiced In extortion cases. They only improve with practice, these rascals. I am convinced that the gang has a permanent base In this city, prob ably a fiat or a private house, for neither tho Countess nor her male associate had rooms at any of the local hotels, accord ing to n round-up Just finished. If they have permanent quarters here, they likely enough have similar fixed stations all over the country. Well, I think wo have talked enough, let us get down to tho real busi ness that brings us here the documents we now have." "Walt a moment," fcrled Monte, ex citedly, "something queer Is happening." His gaae was transfixed upon the table where ho had placed tho threo blue prints and the smgUL.-jfteet of gray note paper marked with the cross. On ono side of the documents an open ebony humidor from Its several compartments offered choice Havanas and tho rarest of Oriental cig arettes. A siphon and some empty glasses spoke tho hospitality of a writ-filled cut glass decanter. All this wns revealed to the small circle by a powerful shaded electric lamp that throw a shaft of puro daylight upon the papers, and objects within range, which tho young multimillionaire had turned In as the Secret Service man talked. Before bringing out tho documents which cost him SGOOO, Monte had had the old butler move the table closer up to the blazing hearth. The log sputtered and crackled while the heat filled the room. Monte rubbed his eyes repeatedly. Ho glowered and gesticulated. His stare was rooted at tho gray notepoper. "Look! Look!" he hoarsely continued. "Watch that cross. See! It Is filling up with new marks and characters." It was. Characters and marks had risen magically upon the surfaco of tho paper. In the spaces between tho lines which hitherto had appeared Immaculately gray, new lines of characters and marks were gradually becoming moro and more visible, until at last when fully distinct, there were no spaces left between the old lines, and tho cross looked like this: "Black art I" ejaculated Agont W.
