Jact that no disquieting development In tho international situation had occurred
over night, ohd most of that clement bought stock in tho early trading.
For a good part of the day nearly all tho transactions on tho door wore of a
professional character, but around noon there was uvldenco of accumulation of
tho copper stocks based on tho expected advance in the Miami dividend and on
further reports referring to tho strong position of that metal. There Is good
authority for tho statement that metal prductlon Is absolutely sold out until tho
end of June, and few of tho large producers now caro to make contracts for tho
third quarter of tho year, even at tho high price of 27 cents a pound.
Some of thoso In close touch with tho selling agencies Insist that the price of
the metal will soon cross 30 cents, and this belief Is making buyers moro urgent
and producers are disposed to refrain from making contracts for far-off delivery.
Thcro was Impressive selling of some of tho railroad stocks, making thoso
Issues extremely weak in tho afternoon. Strong, Pturgls & Co. supplied fiOOO
shares of. New York Central, and thoro was selling by other houses with Important

ings to be reported by tho corporation during the present year, and thcro has
been a rumor that an understanding lias boon reached by tho Hoard of Directors
on this question. The amount to be sot aside has boon placed in those rumors
' at about J60,000,000, Officials of tho company refuse to comment on tho matter.

NEW YORK, March 31. The known movements of money for the week
' nded with tho close of business yesterday, Indicate a loss In rash by the local
Institutions of $1,048,000. There was a gain by tho banks from tho interior of

$1,090,000, which was offset by a loss to tho Federal reserve banks of $2,138,000.
leaving tho final net loss of $1,048,000, indicated above. Tho Federal Reserve
Bank was a debtor at tho Clearing House to tho extent of $G,43ri,000 and a creditor
In tho total of $8,573,000, leaving a loss by the banks of $2,138,000 In connection
with Federal Reserve Bank transactions. Tho above figures do not tnko into
account the largo withdrawals from tho banks that nro expected to take place

txj-ause April 1 is a quarterly interest and dividend disbursement date.

Many new hlfih records of revenues will
bo established by the railroads this year
nnd there Ib some talk ot Increased divi
dends by a few roads and resumptions
and Initial payments by others. For some
tlmo the question of dividend payments on
preferred stocks of the Erie Jtnllroad Conv
pnny hns been discussed In financial cir
cles, while the samo has been truo with
respect to the Chesapeake and Ohio. Now
York Central nnd Norfolk and Western
have been spoken of ns likely to Increase
their payments, although to dato nothing
definite has been determined or announced
In this connection. .
Obviously, some of tho companies would
like to Increase their dividend rates, but
the labor situation has ncted as n deterrent
element. No doubt nn Increase In divi
dend rates. Initial payments, or resump
tions would be used to Rood advantage ns
nn argument by railroad employes for
tho advance in wages, wlilch Is now being
sought by that group of Individuals.
Jtnllroad oUlclals as a whole malhtaln
that wages of employes compare favor
nbly with rates paid other classes of
labor throughout tho United States, al
though they arc perfectly willing to nd
just tho matter by tho elimination of
certain unfavorable elements now obtain

Is pointed out, men nro now paid for a
