keynotes of the piece
Many of us have read this novel of
- Henry Seton Merrlmnn. It tells a thrill
Ins story of a l'rlnco who plots with the
people ncalnst his Czar. It also tclH nf
his love for a clrl. whom his duty to his
peopto compols him to give up. Ills con
pplracy against the Czar Is discovered and
wrecked, whllo he, with the Rlrl ho loves,
flees Into voluntary exile.
This la tho Etory Lasky has filmed. It
is full of dramatic action and wonderfully
Interesting character drawing. It Is a
story of human appeal yet exciting from
its very beginning
Lasky has put a great cast In this
film. Besides the Ftar, there are such
Jilayers as Theodore Iloberts, tho finest
character actor of tho screen, with tho
possible exception of Tully Marshall,
Thomas Mclghati, whoso straightforward,
manly method mako tho Insipid hero
parts ho often plnys almost lifelike and
virile, Raymond Hatton, Hrncst Joy nnd
Mabel Vnn Huron, whoso work was ko
excellent In 'The Woman" and 'The tllrl
of tho Golden West."
But It Is Dlanche Swe t who truly
stars In tho film. Often the star Is that
In name only. But with Blanche Sweet,
tn "Tho Sowers," she stars In fact as well
as name. Her acting Is sincere and
natural, with n pathetic tlnililncss In the
love scenes most delightful.
Unfortunately Lasky has not used his
famous ambcr-colond lighting for thw pic
ture, but the photoplay and light direction
i up to his usual high standard.
That numetous poitlon of the public
who have read "The Harrier." "The Silver
Horde" and "Tho Iron Trail." the Hex
Beach novels, of which tho Lubin Com
pany, of Philadelphia, has sucuiuil the
photoplay rights. Is invited to form itself
Into a jury. The pla. as Shakespeare
said, may be the thing, but on the screen,
the individuality of tho player Is of equal,
nnd In some instances apparently of more
Importance.
Those who have read tho novels aro
now Invited to select their Ideal oast of
principals for each play and mail their
selection to tho Lubin Company. They
are not confined to a choice of present
screen players. There are stage favorites
who have still to make their debut before
the camera.
There is a man in Brookline. Mass ,
who wants to become a movlng-plutuie
actor and In writing the Fox h'llm Cor
poration asking for a place sas. " have
