As the Metropolitan Opera House knows neither Trojan or Tyrlnn, but wel comes all who come In tho nnme of Art, Its stngo hospitably varied with German opera the week's choreography of the Slnv poseurs and paBseurs. So tho local opera season ot 1915-16 ended Its merit? and deficiencies. Its un fulfilled hopes nnd Its hrllllant achieve ments In a burst of neutrality nnd splen dor with one of tho Infrequent repetitions of Wngner'n comic opera. "Die Meister slnger von Nuernberg." This Is a lyrlc ilrama. weighty enough In some of Its leaden moments, but relatively so Im ponderable in contrast with tho formal music-drama, of the "Ring" tetralogy as t . be considered the light masterpiece of the Iiayretith School, possibly excepting 'Haensel und Grotel," a "marchen mlt inuslk " with gossamery weaving of lelt motlven and naivete of theme. I Wagner did tho whole job and did It well Ho wrote before the days of the , Smith Family Robinson and tho Broad- 1 wny syndicates who assemblo musical comedies Humperdlnck's Is a fairy opera, pure and simple, with simplicity Its aim. Wag ner s "Master Singers" functions genuinely as comic opera In blend nf humor nnd satire. In his flaying of the formalists who criticised him ho Is as relentless as Aristophanes, and nothing that Gilbert and Sullivan wrote Is more piercing than the shafts of his musical and verbal wit. Jacques Urlus, as Walther, was clear and ringing as to tho upper voice, but In the earlier parts of tho opera the lower register seemed clouded. He redeemed himself In the choice melody of the nrize soiur. Wltherspoon was always ade quate oh Pogner, but did not make tho goldsmith stand out as a tonal creation In the way that Hinckley once did This will probably be Mr. Witherspoon's laBt season In opera. Hermann Well seemingly cannot make his Sachs a charncter. blending the gran diose nnd the grand magnificent of bouI but he can and did re-create a sympathetic being. He was at least a satisfying locum tenens, though ho will hardly ever breed the memories of a Carl Fischer or Anton van Hooy. Ho sang tho llttlo air In the night scene surpassingly well. The frisky and mischievous David of Relss. a classic interpretation, and tho equally classic Ueckmesser of Gorltz, Hdgety. Jealous and malicious, leavened the action, which was slow In the opening act. Mme. Gadal.l was In good voice and spirits and her perennial Eva charmed. Bodanzky's skilled conducting elim inated clashes between voices and orches tra. It was properly strenuous and vigor ous at times, and restrained when re pression was needed. W. R. M. "PETER PAN" EXPLORES NEVER-NEVER LAND AGAIN And Takes a Riotously Happy Audi ence With Him Yesterday afternoon a standing-room-only audience of children took the second turning to the right and went straight on till morning or would have If "Peter Pan" hadn't ended about 5 o'clock and the ticket taker of the Broad Street The atre hadn't Insisted on opening the doors Into a wet, squally, everyday and gen erally nasty world. Which Is only a very second-hand and unsatisfactory way of describing the wonder work that went on at the Broad. H wasn't Barrle's play that seemed so miraculous to grown-ups. It wasn't alto gether that eager audience that Insisted on believing loudly and vociferously In fairies. To some of us It was the relation of player to play and to audience, the wholesome, downright satisfaction that the actors seemed to get out of putting every possible ounce of gusto into the parts. Not a single one deserves raoro mention than another not even the player of Peter himself. They all tasted that singular wine of the theatre, complete and happy service to a happy audience. Some of the audience envied them their divine tipple. K- M. Frankford Miss A- May Seal, of 1330 Orthodox street, waa hostess to the members of her card club on Monday evening.
