A few years ngo 'The Blrc Idea"
opened In New York, the cast IncluillnR
Ernest Glendennlnp:, William Courtlclfih
anil Desmond Kelly. Suddenly In the
middle of a seemingly successful run. It
'simply stopped playing. It iult -without
rhyme or reason and 'quickly passed from
eight.
But there was one really bin Idea about
It. That a man felt that he owed surh n
lot to his father that ho should sacri
fice his life to save him. He sold his
Ufa to another and when the time came
to pay he stood ready to do It. This
same proposition, that of selling one's life
10 another. Is the nltuRtlon which Mabel
Taliaferro faces In "Her Great Price."
And In both stories tlto blB Idea It
turned to nccount In a literary form. In
the play, It was another play you wit
nessed. In tho picture. It Is a novel
which tells the story you nee or. the screen.
There are certainly reminiscences of tho
"Bis Idea" In "Her Great I'rlce."
Mabel Taliaferro Rives a delightful In
terpretation of the poor llttlo girl who
feels that death Is tho only way out. Sho
Is natural, pretty and appealing. Hut It
Is as tho child of a drunken, down-and-out
"hum" In tho movie that sho does
her cleverest work. Kho docs not look
a day over 13 or 14 years of age. Not
11 gesture or an expression IipIIph her
looks. Sho Is just a little girl of the lower
classes, abused and Ill-treated. Ono Is
absolutely nstonlshcd at tho chnngo when
tho "fado outs" bring Miss Taliaferro her
self on tho screen, telling tho story of
tho child. It Is a rcmarltablo pleco of
character acting.
Sidney Chaplin, who recently rnmpletcil
tho business arrangements whereby bis
brother Charles was fecured by tho
Mutual chiefs, and who accompanied
Charles Chaplin's party as far as Chi
cago, has returned to New York It looks
as If brother Sid was not going to work
with brother Charles.
Frank Kecnan, who resumed wink at
Incevlllo some time ago, Is now busy mak
ing a picture that somewhat tesvmblcs
"Tho Coward," that excellent production
made by Thomas II. Ince. uliich nn a
strong feature on tho Urst Trlanglo pro
gram. Charles liny Is the s-on, and In that
part he Is good, l.oulse Glaum Is the girl
and Gertrude Claire Is the mother, which
completes an ndmlrablo cast.
William R. Smith, president of the fa
mous Players' exchange, announces that
Anita King, "The Paramount Girl," will
appear In a Lasky-Pnramount picture
called "The Ilace," which will be released
Thursday. April 6. The story of this pho
toplay Is built nround Miss King's trip
across tho continent In a motorcar, which
was finished last fall. On tho homo
stretch sho visited Philadelphia and spoko
from tho platform of the Stanley Theatre,
also several other photoplay houses In this
city. Sho Is the only person, man or
woman, who ever made the trip by motor
car, absolutely alone, from coast to coait.
With Miss King, ns a co-star, will bo Vic
tor Moore.
MAGISTRATES OP CITY MAY "STRIKE"

Meeting Called to Protest Against Order Removing All
i rmnnrf.nnf" flnaes to Citv Hall Threaten to
Stop Station House Hearings
A "strlko" among tho Magistrates of
Iho city Is browing.
Notices wero sent out today by Magis
trate I.csllo Yates, Bocretnry of the Mag
istrates' Association of Philadelphia, sum
moning the members of the minor Jiullci
arv to a protest meeting agnlnst "Hul
letln 231" of the Pollco Bureau, which
orders all cases classed ns "Important"
to bo heard nt the Central Station, at City
Hall. In case a compromise Is not ar
ranged before tho time of the meeting
next Monday. It Is snld, tho Magistrates
will rofuso to hear cases nt tho various
station houses, but will remain firmly and
defiantly In their respective ofllcos.
In the meantime efforts will bo made by
tho Magistrates to reach nn agreement
Willi Director Wilson and Superintendent
Itoblnson, who Issued the order to tho
pollco March 22. The order, first promul
gated January 30, 1916, provides for the
hearing of all "Important" cases nt the
central station, leaving the Magistrates
such rases as cruelty to animals, ordlnnry
nssnult and battery, gnmbllng and Intem
perance. The magistrates contend that their
practice of going from station to station
to hear cases is nn act oi courtesy uu
their part, and that they aro not required j
to do It. Tho cases left lo their decision,
they say. usually result In discharges. The
number of fees are thus diminished.
The meeting of the nssoclalloir, nt wlilcn
the bulletin will be discussed, will bo held
In Boom G2!i, City Hall, next Monday
afternoon, nt 3:10 o'clock.

Ignored when It tried to present Ihe plea
of the union to tho commissioners for tho
pilvllegc of holding religious servlcc3 in
Ihe park during the coming summer.
The Itev ,f. M. S Isenberg, who reported
for the commltteo, nsserted that there was
every Indication that the committee was
"Ignored Intenlonally". when It went to
tho olllce of tho Park Commissioners nt
the time of their last meeting for the
puipooo of nn Interview, which was re
fused. The Bev. Dr. C H. Wooiston.
pastor of the Mast Baptist Church, a mem
ber of tho committee, sold that the action
wns Just ns he had expected. " 'You be
good lltle boys and go home and put your
request In writing, was whnt wo wero

When Doctor Wooiston had finished
speaking there came cries of "Go higher
up ! We've fooled with the commissioners
long enough." And then Mr. Burnett, who
Is secretary of tho union, nroso and mndo
the threat. Ho first explained how letters
had been sent to the secretary and each
of tho members of tho board beforo tho
meeting, nnd then said that If they did
not receive them, ns Secretary Martin had
contended. It wns the fault of tho post

go to the park, nnd face nrrest If need be,
for tho snko of the open-nlr services.
"If wo can't get nny satisfaction any
other way," he declared, "since tho park
belongs to the people, I, with one or half
a doten or more ministers, will go to the
park and hold services without permis

nnd, If they do, wo can light tho matter

Much discussion followed, nnd nevcral
called that they wotlld go nlong" to con

to send requests for the privilege of nn
