FINANCIAL NEWS
BEARS TRIED TO DEPRESS PRICES;
f DRIVES DID NOT INDUCE SELLING
News Relating to Mexican Situation Intensified Read
ing Strong on Expected Announcement of
Important Developments in June
High Points in Today's Financial News
Highest price for'Var silver since 1914 reached today. Big demand
for the metal. About 20,000 shares of Cambria Steel have not been turned
in to Atidvale under sale plan at $81 a share. Price of steel rivets boosted
$2 a ton. Dank of France lost gold in week, while Hank of England
gained. Foreign exchange market dull, Favorable earnings for Lehigh
Valley and Southern Pacific in February. Utah Consolidated Copper
declared a dividend of SO cents and an extra disbursement of 25 cents a
share.
NEW YOItK. March ,23.
Efforts -were again made by the bearish contingent to depress prices in
stocks today, but on the boardroom floor, where the trading was closely watched,
It was Bonernl comment that tho bear drives were without success in Inducing
outsldo selling nnd that tho only result of the bear operations was it further
Increase lit the nlready largo outstanding short account.
"While tho bear attacks were In progress the news relating to the Mexican
campaign was Intensified as much as possible, and In order to nttrnct general
attention to tho Mexican situation Mexican Petroleum wns subjected to frequent,
concentrated attacks. This stock proved tho weakest point on the market, as
few Wall street Interests are Inclined to tako a position on tho long side In
It, and tho only support Is that furnished by tho bankers concerned In Its control.
Reading attracted- general attention by Its strength In the nfternoon.
, Without any special bidding, the stock was taken by a number of brokers on
small orders all tho way from 86 to 8"jg. but above 87 some of the room traders
- joined In tho buying because of the Indications of persistent absorption by a
single group of financiers. These buyers had little to say about the incentive
for the movement, but the statement Is ngaln made by close atllllatlous of the
buyers that announcement of Important development! will bo made In June.
nd that accumulation now Is on definite knowledge of what that announcement
will be. .
It was a matter of general understanding in some important banking circles
that a new pool or syndicate has been formed in the Wabash Issues, and those
stocks wereTrnorc prominent In today's trading than they have been for n long
tlmo past.
Pool activities were tiguln noted In many of the war-order stocks, but tho
" speculative public seems for the tlmo indifferent to What these stocks do,
or what their industrial outlook Is. Standard Issues are steadily gaining In favor,
but stocks llko Union Paclllo are no scurco that there is no possibility for such
an accumulation at a fairly low level as could be desired by any market com
bination that might be disposed to begin active operations In them. Some
large buying orders were executed In fnlted States Steel common, and this
buying made tho stock Immune from bear attacks for the day.
.More Inquiries Tor Copper in Market
XEW YORK, March 23. Tho chief feature of the copper murfcet today wus
tho increased number of Inquiries from domestic consumers and from Kurupe.
Ijirgc quantities are involved, the estimated total ranging between SO.000,000
and 60,000,000 pounds. As has been true for some time past, the question of
delivery Is receiving more nttentlan than price. Leading producers and deal
ers continue to quote nominally at 20 cents and 28 & cents, respectively, far
spot and nearby tnuterial. The amounts that can be purchased for early ship
ment are so small, however, that little significance Is attached to these prices.
For Juno copper Important Interests are asking 27' cents n pound, with 27
cents quote fdr July. August and September shipment.
Steel Rivets Up ?2 a Ton
PITTSBURGH, March 23. Manufacturers of steel rivets have advanced
prices $2 a ton. Rivets wcro marked up $3 a ton ten days ago. Tho semifinished,
steel market 13 constantly gaining strength. Tho conviction that a shortage
of raw material will become acute in a Tew months has extended from pro
ducer to consumer.

Attention today was drawn to tho
mining stocks listed on the Philadelphia
Stock Exchange because of the advance
in the price of bar silver In New York
and London, tho price In New York 59 .
cents being tho highest nt which It has
sold since 1914. At that figure a rain of
13 i cents Is shown over the low quota
tion of last year. Of the mining Issues,
Tonopah Belmont was the most active,
nearly 8000 shares changing hands by 2
o'clock, that stock being tho most nctlve
on Change. The price advanced n. good
sized fraction. It Is known that Tonopah
Uetmont has a considerable quantity of
silver stored which the officials of tho
company have been holding for an ad
vance In the price of the white metal.
Tho advance In silver la due to the
enormous demand for small silver change,
stimulated by the war in England, France
nnd Russia, for Immediate use and the
prospective large requirements of India
and the Orient. One reason advanced by
authorities for the strength Is tho In
creased demand from the Far East, re
sulting from better trade conditions. Tho
coinage requirements 'have Inp-eaBed also,
not nlone of tho eastern countries, but
also 'of the belligerent European countries,
whero the white metal Is almost exclu
sively used for military and navy pay
rolls. Tho present conditions are unique, aa In
tho copper market and In Iron and steel
and tributary markets. An Increasing do
mestic demand for silver has been evi
denced for some tlmo for account of manu
facturers of silver products nnd by the
United States Government.

HEAVY SELLING CAUSED
DECLINE IN COTTON
Unloading by Longs at Opening
Forced Prices Down
NEW YOntC, March 23. Ilaln In parts
of Texas and tho Indications of moro
caused unloading by longs nt the opening
on tho Cotton Exchange this morning and
prices were forced down 3 to 10 points.
The tone was easy. Selling was general,
and as tho buying -was only scattered nt
best the declines on the call were rather
rapid. Later July, which was the largest
sufferer because of the early pressure,
rallied a points, but other options held nt
about the inttlnl levels.
It was raining at Fort "Worth and Abi
lene and ulso In tho western portion of
Texas this morning nnd further precipita
tion was Indicated by tho weather map.
Temperatures were lower virtually all over
the belt.
Liverpool prices were slightly belter
than due, showing losses of but 2 to -I
points, ns compared with S to 4i points
looked for.
The Western belt forecast for rain and
warmer weather was followed by Increased
offerings, but the cotton wns well taken
around 12.05c for July, and prices rallied
during tho middle of the morning, with
delivery selling up to 12.09c, or back to
within 4 points of last night's closing
figures. Thcro were a good many private
rain reports from tho Southwest, nnd one
of the local mnp readers said he believed
conditions pointed to good general rains
rather than mere showers In tho droughty
sections. Private advices from Augusta
put the amount of cotton Involved In the
fire there at 35,000 bales.
