NEW YCmK, March 18.
Thero was tho usual week-end falling oft In speculative Interest In tho
stock market today, leaving price movements almost wholly In tho hands of tho
room traders. This olement seemed to see tho dovo of peace fluttering In tho
horizon and at once started selling stocks all nround the room on -what they
colled peace talk. As a matter ot fact, outside of this clement there was
tod pressilro of stock from any source, and tho declines simply bettered tho market
position and made stocks again Inviting purchases.
Thero was Impressive buying, however, In Norfolk and Western, with such
houses as J, S. Bacho & Co., Ruttcr & Cross, as welt as numerous Investment
houses, buying that stock on Its advance of moro than two points. Tho Invest
ment houses seemed to havo positive Information that tho coming dividend will
bo 1 per cent., but reports wero current In tho Strcot that thero may bo
something extra as well. Why Mexican Petroleum was lifted over ono point
at the opening only Fred Lewlsohn knows. It did not stay at that high price'
long, declining quickly when somo traders offered a few largo blocks.
Distillers Securities was protected and resisted tho bear efforts. After sell
ing down to 46&, It had a quick rally of two points, and on both tho dccllno and
Odvanco was taken by brokers usually acting for lnsldo Interests. No state
ment was mado by tho directors In connection with the deferring of tho divi
dend declaration yesterday, but the Information of the purchnso of bonds and
tho Intontlon of declaring 8 per cent. In May was a matter circulated between
tho officials and their friends.
United States Steel common, with Its quarter rango during tho forenoon,
Indicated tho character of tho market In tho standard Issues. At the close
tho market tone wan steady, with prices of tho majority of stocks ranging
slightly under yesterday's final prices, but with stocks In scant supply nt tho
current quotations.
Tho foreign oxchango market was fcaturolcss.

rtallroads continue largo buyers In the
equipment market While many of tho
orders which are now being placed are
for replacement purposes, yet It Is safo
to say that much new equipment Is being
Added, especially freight cars. This has
been brought about by tho largo demands
for cars for tho transportation of freight,
both for Europe and domestic purposes.
When the earnings of tho different car
riers wero showing decreases and many of
them very large, more than a year ago,
tho railroads naturnlly did not order any
I new equipment. That, of course, Is his
tory now, but it is only pointed out to
show that with tho bottermont of earn
ings roads havo begun ordering largo
amounts of much-needed equipment. The
fact must not bo lost sight of, however,
