Henry Sparks Cattell, a member of tho
Philadelphia liar nnd one of the board of
governors of tho Law Association, died

street. Ho had been 111 from tho grip
for three weeks, Mr Cattell was well
known as a practitioner in the Orphans'
Court nnd as a corporation lawyer. He
was born In thla city, October 3, 1852,

Mr. Cattell ls survived by n daughter.

Charles E. Cattell. Udward K. Cattell. of

Peter J. Hughes, president of the
Hughes Terminal Company, died of heart
dlieasa at his homo In West Philadelphia,
jesterday. Kor many years Mr. Hughes
was active In the political Ufa of this city,
and for tha last 10 years has been Inter
ested In building a terminal on tho Dela
ware Itlver holow tho "IIorBeshoe," with
tho development of Philadelphia as Its
object.
ilr. Hughes was corn in Heading, pa ,
on October 16th, 1857. When two years
old, he was brought to Philadelphia by
his parents, and received his early educa
tion In the publio schools here. In 1883,
he was elected a member of the City Dem
ocratic! Committee from the 16th Ward,
and In 1885 was made n member of the
State Democratlo Committee. During the
same year, he was given a position In
Attorney General Lewis C Cassldy'u of
fice, at Harrlsburg
In 1886 Mr Hughes was transferred to
the Governor's odlce. I-ater, he became
political editor of the Philadelphia Times,
and at ons time acted as city editor of that
paper In 1893 he was appointed a Mag
istrate by CJovernor Pattlson, to succeed
Magistrate Clarke.

Mr Sates, who was 73 years old. was
widely known by reason of his high Ma
sonic rank, being grand secretary of the
Grand lloyal Arch Chapter of Pennsyl
vania. He also was known to Masons
In England and Scotland, being a mem
ber of the Correspondence Committee of
the Grand Chapter. He was a riember
of the Union League as well as its audi
tor, and was connected with many large
financial Institutions.
It Is billeved Mr. Bates' death was
hastened by grief over the recent demise
of George W Kendrlck, with whom he
was associated for many years In Ma
sonic work. Mr. Kendrlck and Mr. Dates
were the last of the original board of
directors of the Masonic Home.
