Denial made by J. P, Morgan A Co. thai Mr. Morgan has arranged
for a British credit against American securities. Stockholder of Midvale
Slecl and Ordnance authorized increase in capital slock from $100,000,000
to $150,000,000. Southern Railuay directors took no action on preferred
dividends. Dank clearings for week showed increase of 18.S per cent,
as compared with corresponding week last year. A'cty York bank slate'
went showed decrease in average and actual loans, and reserves in both
statements were also smaller. Time deposits increased.

The strength and activity -which characterized business In the stork market
In the last two days was absent today, although for n tlmo around, the opening
somo stocks continued to show an advancing tendency,
Weakness In the railway Issues was the subject of a food deal of con
jecture. In somo circles there were reports that such stocks as Southern 1'acMc
are being supplied by agents of the Ungllsh Government, but the room has
been talking for somo tlmo of tho demands of the railroad employes, and It Is
reasonable to suppose that uncertainty over the labor situation was a factor
In Inducing part, at least, of today's selling.
There was also n disposition to regard the Me.lcan situation more seriously,
and tho belief prevailed in some quarters that moro complications may bo
created than the Street understood when the first news came out.
Tho action of Anaconda continued disappointing, that stork showing no
Inside support, although the Street Is confident that the dividend will be
Increased at the coming directors' meeting.
Less hopes were encrtalned of an advance In the New York Central divi

tho British Government desires to Issue a fresh loan In America, elthei secured
or unsecured."
Stock Increase Authorised by Midvale Steel Shareholders.
At a special meeting of the stockholders of the Midvale Steel and Ordnnnro
Company, held In New York today, tho authorized capital stock of tho com
pany was Increased from $100,000,000 to $150,000,000. Tho $50,000,000 of now
stock Is to provide in pait for the rosono Issue to coer the conversion
prlvllcgo which will be afforded bondholders under a proposed trust debenture
to secure nn nggregate principal amount of bonds not exceeding $50 000 000.
This bond Issue is to llnanco In part the acquisition by tho Mldxulo Company
of the stock of the Cambria Steel Company.
