NKW YOniC, March 4.
Moat of tlio trading In tho stock market today roprcsontcd a readjustment
Of tho 5pcculntlvo position. There were some further declines In stocks which
pools hnd lonpr struggled to bring Into popular favor by violent nnd unrcasonnblo
Advances nt frequent Intervals during 1015, nnd liquidation of long-held holdings
of theso stocks mndo many of them extremely weak. On the other hand, accu
mulation with a sound basis made, n number of shares actlvo nnd strong, tha
Upturn Including stocks llko JJutto nnd Superior, which made n belated response
to the Increased extra dividend of $10 a few days ago.
Tho Lowtsohn-Solomon Interests apparently were again Identified with the
hull s?ldo of Mexican Petroleum, nnd used reports of tho opening of a new oil
well ns tho reason for again lifting that stock. There were many Indications
that Maxwell Motors aro nmong those issues that are being pressed for sale,
but tho selling operations are being conducted with tho aid of supporting orders
from banking Interests concerned In tho management of tho company.
Trading In tho leading Issues, such ns United States Steel common, continued
restricted by the disposition to wait for declines before a resumption of Important
accumulation. Buying of this character was generally absent all through the half
day, and was a factor In making Rending weak for tho time. Some of the traders,
who had trailed on tho upward movement In that stock a few days nco, feared to
carry It over Sunday, and closed out their holdings.
As far as tho standard Issues wcro concerned generally, It was n dead day in
the stock market, and trading In the majority of Issues now holding speculative favor
was of a character that should make tho market strong, If no unfavorable develop,
ments occur over Sunday.

29 Cents a Pound Did for Spot Copper
Bids have been mado for ouantltles of spot and nearby copper at 2D cents
a pound, and It is stated by some authorities in tho trade that any 'interest
having 'nearby metal for sale could demand any price up to 30 cents nnd get it.
Heretofore tho spot article has been held nt nboutv2S',2 cents a pound, but
many users, both hero nnd abroad, who are In urgent need of supplies to fill
their requirements, are doing nil they can to comb the market, and this has
resulted In the higher bids.
Further Advances in Steel Prices Predicted
PITTSBURGH, March 4. Advances in steel prices, it is predicted, will cotv
tlnuo for several months. If not throughout the entire year. Buyers are naturally
alarmed, and tho mills aro being pressed for quick deliveries. Sharp competition
among- tho producers In the past Is surpassed by tho present competition among
tho buyers. Tho liills do not want to sell nny more steel, and under such con
dition's, and it Is not uncommon for steel to advance $5 a ton at one time.

COTTON TRADING LIGHT,
"WITH PRICES UNCHANGED
Market Had
Appearance of
Oversold
Being
NEW YOItK, March 4 Business was
email oa the Cotton Exchange this morn
ing. At tho start the tone was steady, with
prices .unchanged to five points lower.
There was no feature to tha trading and
operations on both sides were scattered.
A. light demand for October by Liver
pool kept that option steady. There was
a. tendency to show less uneasiness over
the Washington situation, and the opinion
was expressed by many that the market
at the moment had an oversold appear
ance. Liverpool cables came to 1H points
lower, whereas gains of l'.i to 3 points
had been looked for. Private cables at
tributed the lower prices to hedge selling
in a small market.
The market ruled quiet and featureless
during most of the day. Prices held
within 3 or 3 points of Friday's close, de
mand coming from Liverpool and New
Orleans, while several of the spot houses
and local traders sold on the rallies.
According to figures of the Financial
Chronicle there were 011 shipboard at
United mates ports last evening awaiting
clearance. 114,000 bales, compared with
40?,0QO last year. A Manchester cable
stated that Japanese cotton mill Interests
were seeking to purchase 5S0.O0O spindles
In England.

LONDON, March 4. Germany's dos

savagery Is attributed to severe financial
straits nnd the difficulty of floating; a new
loan without some military success. Kvl
dcntly marl: exchange cannot withstand
the Increasing pressure of redundant cur

The Copenhagen meeting Indicates that
tho solid neutrality of tho Scandinavian
powers may have Important bearing on
future events.
Itusslan Duma reports Indicate prog

Its war debt burden.
A political truco hero has broken the
tariff reformers In three divisions first,
pure protectionists for homo farmers and
manufacturers; second, Imperial prefer
entlallsts, and third, nnti-Qcrmnn prohi
bitionists, who ndvocato a tariff war
ngnlnst Germany after peace. Theso last
are up against the Kast Coast, Bradford,
Manchester and London City Interests.
Lending shipping authorities, nbtably
Sir Walter Runclman, point out that neu
tral ship owners nre profiting far moro
than the British by tho present exorbitant
freights, since all their vessels aro free
and their profits untaxed.
Freight difficulties largely oxplaln tho
falluro of Portland Cement for tho first

The delicate situation In Washington
provoltcs much Interest here. We appre

Prices still soar. Tho Economist's Feb

bank position Is again stronger.
Anxiety about tho new taxes Is in
creasing. Metal speculation has been stopped to

Much Improvement has been shown n
tho bond market during tho last week.
This has been tho result ot two things,
namely, the falling oft In tho sales of for-elKti-Iirld
securities, both stockw nnd
bonds, nnd the buying by Institutions,
move particularly banks and trust com
panies. Many bond men report that tho
demand, In some cases has been urgent.
Tho banks nnd trust companies have a
largo amount of surplus money on hand
nt present nnd thero Is very little demand
for It for loans, no that many of them havo
turned to tho bond market to Invest. For
Investments of this kind the short-term
securities havo generally been sought,
u'hlln mtinli-lii.it li.-mda havo also been
taken. The statement of the Clearing
Houso Association this week showed that
the members bad a surplus of $62,518,000,
an Incrcaso of $7,GOQ,000. Loans, on tho
other hand, only showed nn Increase of
$1,188,000, Hint Item stnndlng nt $470,
731,000. Tho lux-frco bond Is In tho greatest de
mand and this explains tho lnaulry for
tho municipal bond, Ono man, In speak
ing nf the bond market, said that the
llrst question asked by a prospective cus
tomer when told of a bond generally was:
"Is It freo of tax?" It Is Interesting to
nolo that tho prices of municipal Issues
have been bettor maintained hero of late
than those of rails. New Issues aro being
rapidly absorbed.
Itallroad reports for January, as far
as mndo public, nfford a fairly accurate
idea of tho showing that was mndo by tho
carriers as a wholo for that period. With
out exception gains of substantial vol
ume have been shown, nnd nccordlng to
