Moderate speculative buying cruised a show of stronKth In tlio early trading
in today's stock market, but this movement was of short duration and was
followed by a display of llstlcssiiess all through tho rest of the day. In a dragging,
, downward movement nearly all tho early gains were lost, and thero wns noth-

with any degree of significance.
Somo of yesterday's buyers were eager to', turn to tho soiling side and take
small profits, and tho Important houses, whon they appeared In tho market at

Th6 declaration of Increased dividend payments on tho copper stocks and
by Butlo and Superior failed to awakon any bullish Interest or to Induco any
Tallying outside of tho floor, A few of tho room traders made Utah Copper mnvo
up a fraction, but mot a supply of stock from some source, which they suspected
yras connected with tho controlling Interest.
United States Steel common ranged throughout the day from 81 to 80,
and showed only a trfllng not change at tho close. There was a fairly vigorous
advance In tho early trading In Industrial Alcohol, which was nlso followed by
a recession. An advance of more than two points In l'aclflc Mall wns regarded
with Indifference by tho speculative element generally.
Tho railroad stocks were quiet and made no response to the recent publi
cations of largo Increases In net earnings for tho month of January. Other
markets, Including thoso for short-term notos, public utilities and foreign
exchange, were equally flat, and evorywhoro tho disposition to wait for defjnlto
news from "Washington prevailed.

Close London Metal Exchange
lyONDOK, March 3. The Jlrltlsh Oov.
crnment has Issued regulations prohibiting
speculative transactions in copper and all
metals required In the production of any
war materials. The object la to prevent
undue Inflation of prices.
NEW VOrtK, March Jl All tha metal
authorities hero are firm fn the belief that
the closing of the London metal exchange
can hava but one effect 011 the situation
of the various metals In this country. The
shutdown, tt la pointed out, can only mean
that the authorities were convinced that
the prices of tha various metals, especially
copper, would continue their upward
movements. Thin clearly indicates the
position of the copper metal In Kurope,
Which is stronger than ever before In the
history of the Industry.
