Tla an 111 wind that blows no one any
eood It happened that tho hero of this
mtlo tttlo was taking tho air last Sat-
unlar'mornlnff with his mother In an
oucn victoria. Both wcro well bundled
p In furs, and ho woro a soft brown
felt hat. It was very windy that morn
ing but all wont well until tho victoria
turned into th street, whore, with
fc mighty blast, tho wind mot them and
removed that nlco brpwn hat from tho
young man'? head!
Of course thoro wan a delay beforo ho
could stop tho carrtarro and get out, and
in tho mcantlmo tho hat wont spinning
gaily down tho street, flirting out
rageously with every muddy pool nnd
rubbish heap nnd nearly frightening a
poor old horso to death by flapping
against his knees before It was finally
captured by a kindly passoiby, when ho
put a largo and determined foot upon
Its onco immaculato crown.
Fortunately a' hat shop was Just
around tho corner, and when tho young
man emerged from that shop a neat
black and white check cap was pressed
firmly about his ears.
Friends of Mr. Howard Shelley arc
missing his genial countenance In their
dally rounds, because ho has left tho
i City of Brotherly Love for the Land of
Smoko (In other words, Pittsburgh).
Mr. Shelley is a direct descendant, you
know, of William Warner, a captain in
' the Parliamentary Army under Crom
well, who settled in Blockley beforo
William Penn landed on these shores,
nnd who was not only a Provincial
j Councillor, but one of the nine Justices
' appointed under Deputy Governor Mark
fiam. He Is also, a grandson of William
Warner, who was ono of tho founders
of the "State in Schuylkill," ono of tho
oldest soda) organizations of this coun
try, founded In 1732. The Colonial hall
of the Fishing Company was built upon
ground donated by Mr. Warner, I hnvo
, been told.
i His friends are sorry to have him
1 leave Philadelphia, but are all wishing
him tho best of luck.
Another incident which shows tho
trend of tho ago was whispered to mo
the other day. A friend of mine was
dining out for luncheon, nnd one of tho
Invited guests falling to appear they
were kept waiting till every ono wa3
half starved. No word nor sign of tho
young lady. Later I learned that she
had .lunch In town and went to tho
movies. It seems that her engagement
for lunch had completely slipped her
mind. This was rathor hard on the
, hostess. From tho way this young per
aon has been teaBed I fenl very sure
she will not forget an engagement very
soon again. NANCT WYNNE.
