NTAV YORK, Teb. IS.
Tho stock market today hIiowoiI Ita Indppendcnco of the attempted bear
control. Beforo tho opening nnd after tlio early trading erforts woro niutlo to
causo uneasiness by references to the tangled situation nt Washington, and
theso Illusions were followed by vigorous drives nt tho war Industrials nnd
"whatever other stocks In which there were no nearby buying orders. Bnld
wln Locomotive, StudcbnUer and Maxwell Motors were forced down on these
bearish efforts, but tho recessions In those Issues hardly attracted attention.
Bear talk and plunging by room traders on the short side wero futllo In
inducing any liquidation In tho last half of the dav. Stocks wcro wanted nt
concessions, and when they could not bo obtained nt low loels bids wero
advanced, nnd tho important movements In a number of stocks wero to
materially higher prices. American Zinc nttiactod most attention, moIng
up more than flvo points nnd making a now high record, and Butto and Su
perior also continued Its upward movement.
Buying orders in the copper stocks, based on predicted Increases in
dividends at the March meeting, wero plentiful nnd made those storks nrtlvo
and strong; and the expectation that tho January earnings, mntkiug tho begin
ning of a new fiscal yenr on both Central and I'rlo, will show a further Improve
ment over tho closing months of 1915, Induced effoits to accumulate those
stocks, but the supply was too small to permit any substantial accumulation.
