Thcro Is an old saying about "give a
dog a bad namt', etc.," which Is very true,
but thcro Is ono worse thing to do than
that. Give n photoplay ttar n namo for
one kind tif part and ho or sho Is con
demned to play that kind forever and
over. Amen. Tho llrat may lay you open
to attack from tho S. P. C. A., while the
latter Is practically condemning a fellow
human being to Ufo slavery.
Still one must admit that certain of
said humane get along very well on Fuch
.slavery, r.ook at Mary l'lckford as tho
"poor llttlo abused hcioluc with the pretty
pout," l'carl White, as "tho serial hero
ine with tho punch In detective btorlcs,"
Thctlu Hum as "tho vamplro of tho
serpen," and so on, until wo meet Wll
llnm Fnrnum, "doomed forever, to fight
bodily ccmllicts" In all his pictures.
Mr. riirnum was convicted and sen-
teticed for his marvelous 'fight In "Tho
.Spoilers." Slnco then ho has fought
through such scrappy affalts as "Tho
Now Governor," "Tho Droken Law," "The
Woiideiful Adventure," "Tho Soldier's
Oath," and now "Fighting Mood," and
ono must admit ho fights 'excellently in
this last otic.
Tho htory Itself deals with a man born
of fighting stock, who is convicted of, a
cilmo lie novcr commlttc,d and sent to
piison Vi'hllo thcro his thoughts nre
turned to religion through tho efforts of
the chaplain and on his relcaso ho goes
Into the ministry. Ills terrific temper
counts against him In tho East, so ho
goes West where fate leads him again to
tho man who wrecked his life, and to tho
girl ho loves. TIio end Is thrilling nnd
dramatic.
Farmitn plays tho rolo of tho fighting
parson mnguiriccntly In tho hcencs whero
dramatic or melodramatic power Is
needed. Ho falls shoit, novvevor, of grasp
ing tho beauty of tho character In the
quieter scenes.
Dorothy Ilernard Is delightful In tho
extremely hard role of tho poor little
abused heroine, who suffers sorrow nnd
degradation thiough the schemes of her
husband, tho villain of tho piece.
Henry J. Hubert as Xllakc, her hus
band, Is nbout ns "nasty, mean and low
down a skunk" (to o.uoto W. A. S.) as
It Is possible to find. Ho shows tho full
forco of eVll In the role very well, with
out being unnatutal of munnor or ranting
his part.
Tho story Is cleverly nnd logically
handled, even though thaplot Is im
probable. Tho photogiaphy Is fine
thiottghout. Tho fight In tho Inn thrills
tremendously,
"Driftwood," dramatized from Owen
Davis' play hy Anthony Kelly, will soon
bo completed under tho direction of Mar
shall Farnum, of the Ocean Film Cor
poration. Tho star of the featuro Is
Vera Mlchelena, nnd her leading man Is
Harry Splngler.
Prior tp his present engagement Mr.
Splngler appeared In several of tho Uni
versal features, starring King Qnggot.
Mr. Splngler's best work In tho cinema
field was rovealed during his stay of seven
months with tho Fox Film Corporation
during which tlmo ho enacted tho Ju
venllo leads In "Tho Bondsman," "From
tho Valley of the Missing," "Tho Tlund
