FINANCIAL NEWS
MARKET UNSETTLED BY REPORTS
OF GERMAN REPLY ON LUSITANIA
' Cables Had It That There Would Be Nothing Which
, " Gould Be Construed as an Agreement to Disavow
1 4 the Attack Crucible Steel Feature in Afternoon
NEW YOItK. Foli. I.
JThe stock market was again unsctttcil ly reports received In soino Im
portant circles that tho Gorman reply was ot a character to brlni? the t.usltnhln
question again forward as a disturbing factor and advlccn to this effect were
tesarded as sound enough to cause a general outpouring of stocks by a number
of the leading Interests. Tho houses which had been commuted to tho bull
sldo for tho Inst three days were among tho heaviest sellers on this movement
nnd the sentiment on tho floor quickly becamo ono of nervousness over tho
Lusltrtntn question.
Cables received by lending Interests woro generally to the effect that thero
would bo nothing In tho answer which could be construed ns an agreement to
disavow the Lusltnnla attack, but In tho mtndn of many of tho Inrgo Wall street
operators the belief prevailed that no matter how tho answer might read
friendly relations between this country and Germany ore Imperative for Ger
many's necessities. Not only because of Its facilities as a harbor, but also ns a
court of appeal In matters In which nit Indorsement of Germany's policy Is
sought.
This belief checked the urgent selling which caused breaks around middny
nnd for a time In the lato afternoon attention was detracted from tho German
nnswer by the violent advance In Crucible Htcol. Uuylng orders wore placed
In that stock without regard tp tho fear of tho diplomatic titimlo.
On this buying Crucible Steel moved up to a new high price for the move
ment nnd tho Street usstnucd that when purchases were made In the manner
; Crucible Steel was bought It must bo with u definite purpose In view. This
accumulation was taken as confirming tho report of n pending merger or absorp
tion of tho property in connection with rumored consolidations of steel Indus
trials, but there was nothing In board room gossip to give a lino on what disposi
tion was to bo made of tho concentrated holdings of the stock.
There was some heavy and Impressive selling of New York Central nnd ft
number of miscellaneous Issues were In supply at cotieos'slons, without regard
to the trading and prlco movements In tho rest of tho list. Marino preferred
was Influenced to some extent by reports of differences existing between tho two
committees which may Interfere with the work of readjusting tho capitalization
of tho company. Distillers Securities was taken steadily because of statements
by tho president that the stock will bo put on tho dividend list nt tho March
meeting.

Receiver of Rock Island Taking Steps to Dissolve Company
t It Is learned that the receiver for the Hock Island Company Is taking stops
to dissolve tho corporation before May next when taxes under tho law will be
due. Tho steps that will be taken will result In a dissolution and not In a
liquidation. There Is this Important difference in the proceedings, namely,
that a dissolution called for tho winding up of a company, whereas a liquidation
would Involve a distribution of assets. While the' Hock Island Company had
operating contracts with tho Western Coal Company, which were believed to
have a. value of about $75,000, they are now given a valuo of only between
$20,000 and $30,000. The Hock Island company has on baud a few hundred
dollars In cash, but against these trivial assets, tho receiver of the comiiany
has a claim of $3,000,000. Obviously, thero will bo no net assets to distribute.
Tho corporation will simply bo wound up and with its stock cense to exist.
England to Issue New List of Dollar Securities
LONDON, Feb. 4. Announcement was made today that the Treasury would
cancel tho last supplementary list of 44-dollar bond securities tomorrow nnd
that It would Issuo a fresh supplementary list of 4E securities purchasable by
the treasury next week. Tho practlco of Issuing a list of "unusual" bonds at
frequent Intervals Is expected to continue.
WHEAT GENERALLY
STRONG DURING DAY
Exports for the Week Were
10,567,676 Bushels Trade
in Corn Not Large
CHICAGO, Keb. 4. Wheat was strong
In the main today, although at ono tlmo
It sold down to within a quarter cent ot
last night's close, May touching $1.33U
and July $1.244. after they had risen to
J1.34T4 and 1.-'J'4, respectively. The set
back was caused by active selling fol
lowing assertions that Germany would not
admit that tho sinking of tho Lusltanla
was Illegal.
This decline followed a sharp advance In
tho early dealings. Shorts covered freely
on tho bulge, their wants being supplied
by conservative longs and cash concerns
generally. Thero was a rally from tho
bottom on covering, May closing at $1.:I4
and July at $1.ZSV&. or 1 cent abovo yes
. terday's last prices.
Estimates on today's export sales were
not available up to tho close, although It
was rumored that some business hnd
been done. Receipts at Interior points
were liberal and advlce3 from the North
west as to supplies were bearish.
Exports of wheat and Hour for the week
were 10,507,676 bushels, against 9.SS3.671

northern Missouri.
Elsewhere the fields were covered, with

FOREIGN EXCHANGE
NEW YOItK, Feb. 1 At the opening of
business this morning the feature was a
sensational rally In French exchange
franc cables, which yesterday had de
clined to 5.93, opened this morning at 5.S8,
a gain of 5 points. The other market was
npt particularly changed, and business
vtt moderate. Tho strength of French
exchange was again explained as due to
an impending large, French credit In this
cpuntry. Sterling opened a shade higher.

In the final dealings the market was
dull, but in the m'aln steady. The only
quotable change was a slight shading off
from the best figures of the day In French

banking houses reported that sterling In
that city had been quite scarce, facilitat

COTTON DID NOT RESPOND
TO ADVANCE AT LIVERPOOL
Heavy ScllinR From the South by
Spot Houses the Cause
NRW YORK, Feb. 1. Heavy selling
from the South and by spot houses pre
vented the cotton market from responding
to Liverpool cables nt the opening this
morning and the early tone wns barely
steady, with prices 1 point lower to 2
points higher. Tho demand wns limited,
with one Important operator the only
good buyer.
The market was unsettled during, the
greater part of the session. After the
early setback prices sold about 2 to r,
points above last nlght'H closing figures,
but tho demand seemed to enmo chlelly
from Liverpool, while the advance met
further scattered offerings, and prices
later cased oft under selling which seemed
to retlcct nervousness over International
conditions. July contracts sold off from
12.n0c. to 12.19c. or nbotit 7 points under
last night's close, and tho general list sold
about r, to 7 points net lower. Business
was not active and the tone was feverish
with comparatively small orders affecting
prices, pending more definite ndviccs with
roforence to the Lusltanla negotiations.
Some of the later reports from Wash
ington wcro more favorable, however, and
after selling off from 12.07 nnd 12.19 for
July, or about 5 to 7 points not, lower,
tho market rallied 4 or 5 points from Iho
lowest. Trading became less actlvo after
the Hurry of liquidation, with the market
probably waiting for more dcllnlto politi
cal ndviccs or for somo indication as to
tho further attitude of Southern spot
holders.
Liverpool cables wero better than due,
showing gains of 10 to 11 points, against
expectations of 5'A to 7 points. Only a
limited amount wns offered, private ca
bles stated, but the market was described
as a small affair. .
Temperatures wero still below normal
In the cotton belt this morning, but clear
weather prevailed In nil sections.
Kxports for the day aggregated 29,027
bales, compnr'd with 41,5.17 bales last
year. Clearances for tho season to dato
amount to 2,909,030 bales, contrasted with
4,127,270 bales for the corresponding per
iod last season.
