WIDE ADVANCES IN MANY STOCKS
SCORED DURING THE DAY'S TRADING
This Was a Direct Result of Outside Buying by Both
Large and Small Interests Baldwin Locomotive
' Supplied at Concessions
NEW YOItK, Feb. 3.
' Interests committed to the long side of the tnnrkct had Rood cause for
Ratlsfnctlon In the course of prices mid the character of I null tip throughout tlio
day. There were wldo advances In many stocks, which at times would bo re
garded as nlmost sensational, but nro now taken as an ordinary Incident to be
recorded In tlio gencrnl run of trading.
Wlllys-Ov-orlond, as an Instance, advanced 14 points to 232 early In the day
and nn advance ot 20 points was made In South Porto Klco Sugar, while i
number of other specialties, Including Industrial Alcohol, Cuban American
Sugar and Continental Can made advances from 4 to 6 points. Gains of more
than 2 points were numerous In other specialties and the active Issues In
general were all established at now high levels for the week.
This Improvement was brought about In tho lending stocks without any
effort of manipulation or support and was In direct response to the outside
baying from both largo and small Interests, brought In by tho declines which
occurred on Monday.
Baldwin Locomotive was supplied by Clark, Chllds & Co. an dottier
houses at concessions and at the snmo time assertions wero made that tlio

acted fairly well, Krlo and New Vhrk Central making fractional gains and
there was conlldcnt buying of Itock Island, based on tho continued fuvorablo

tion or default on tho 4s,
Cruciblo Steel has been In scant supply for tho Inst few weeks, or since
tho statement was made that tlio control of the tsock had been obtained by
J. P. Morgan & Co. Those who sought for an Incentive for the strength shown
lh tho post three days attributed the Improved condition to the prospects of a
favorablo answer by .Germany to tho last Administration note und It Is hold
by one firm thnt tho fact that the Appnm nhd been brought Into an American
port by a. German prlsio crew was vldenco In advance that tho answer will bo

January Earnings of Northern Pacific Expected to be Good
While It Is understood that the data so far received do not Indicate that tho
f, earnings of tho Northern Pacific for January will bo as largo as they were for
December, It Is probable that tho figures will show an Increase from 16 to 18
per cent, over January a year ago. Normally, January Is not as good n month
as December for tho company. This year business was somewhat Interrupted
by tho heavy snowstorms In the Rocky Mountain section. The Northern
Pacific, however, was able to keep Its lino open throughout tho stormy periods
and Is said to have boon tho only northwestern transcontinental line that ac
complished this feat.

enormous scale, from both domestic and foreign consumptive sources.

NEW YORK. Fob. 3. A fair response to

cotton mar!:ct this morning anil at the
start tho tone was steady, with prices
three to seven points higher. Business
Was comparatively small. The buying was
Quito general, wl :lo tho greater part of

ed slightly, with local traders offering and
prices reacted two to four points.
At tho time of tho opening here. Liver
pool reported 'dvances of eight and one
jialf to nine points, whereas gains of but
five and one-half to six and one-half points
had been looked for. A prlvato cable
stated that the better tone was duo to
Continental buying and a cessation of tho
recent liquidation.
' Trading was quiet, but prices gradually
eased from tho opening level under a re
newal of scattering liquidation or local
pressure. May contracts sold off from
12.12c. to 12.02c, with tho general list
working about 4 to 5 points under last
night's closing figure.
' Local covering In a nnrrow market sent
prices several points net higher In tho
afternoon. Near months In the New Or

tive easiness, as compared with Now
Tork, this being taken to reflect tho pres
sure of spot supplies, nlthough there was
nothing, in tho news to suggest any ma
terial weakening of holders. Arrivals of
cotton at New York today were 0216 bales.
Including 10SS bales lintcrs. The local
stock ot 232,000 bales now Includes 23,000
bales llnters and about 0000 bales of for
eign cotton. Exports for the day were

In the cotton bolt. The map showed gen
eral precipitation In the east.
Tho receipts of cotton nt the ports for
the day wero estimated at 20,000 bales,
Compared with 15,860 bales last week,

LUtlp Change In Sliver
NEW YORK, Feb. 3. A local authority
on silver says that there has been little
pew In the situation during tho past few
weeks, and he does not look for much
change In conditions until there is a
buying movement on the part of India.
He points out that the supplies are nat
urally curtailed by tho unsettlement in
Mexico, but adds that the demand also
lit not as large as It might bo and with
any purchasing by Indiu higher prices
would be Inevitable. As it Is, he says,
virtually all the silver taken out of
the market at present Is for coinage
purposes and, In his opinion, under the
circumstances a steady market with only
small fluctuations either way Is likely,
until there Is a decided change one way
or the other.

Lri-1G. It was erroneously stated this morn
ing In some reports that the low record
for reiehmarks was reached at 73. As a
matter of fact, tho lower record for Ger
man exchaiiRii was 72 7-lfi, and was es
tablished about u month ni?o. The weak
ness lit French oxchniiBo was coincident
with tho reported necessity ot another
larco loan from this country.
Tho feature of tho market In tho sec
ond hour of business was a further decline
In French cxchnnRo. PcnliiiRS continued
moderate in tho general market. In francs
tho prevailing disposition was to sell, and
bids wero few nnd fnr between. Franc
cables declined to 5.02U and checks to
5.03. Tho extreme low record for French
oxchnnBo last year was 0.03. Operations
in German exchange were nominal, but
tho tone both In rclchsin.irks nnd Vienna
exchange was heavy. Sterling was dull,
without a recovering tendency, at 4.75i for
demand nnd 4.76' for cables, no'vtli
standing tho recent Importations of told
and of America,!! foreign-held securities.
s Money in New York
NEW YOHK, Feb. 3. - Unbroken case
continues In tho market for Ume money
und the largo accumulations ot funds are
coincident with u moderate demand. The
liquidation that has taken plnco since the
(Irst of tho year In a number of stocks
that wero rushed up to extraordinary fig
ures toward the end of Inst year has
helped to fortify tho locul loan posltli.
At tho sumo time both bankers and brok
ers are showing a conservative uttltude
with tho Intention of averting tenden
cies to inflation. The local loan situ
ation would obviously be strengthened
greatly if repoita are true that tho Brit
ish Government Is seeking to borrow
rather than sell here the mobilized for
elgn-hclil American securities.
Thus so fnr there has been but little
cvldenco of tho increased offerings of
prime mercantile paper that was expect
ed to develop about this time or a little
later. As has been pointed out, how
ever, the basic conditions In general busi
ness nro unusually sound, owing to the
general spirit of conservatism and larger
use ot cash Instead ot credit In many
cases and the unprecedented demand for
materials and commodities. As hereto
fore banks, trust companies and other
financial institutions are willing buyers
nt 3 per cent, of all offerings of choice
paper, either for short maturity or run
ning up to 6 and 7 months. This posi
tion la taken rather than to grant dis
counts upon short maturities of other
than strictly gilt-edged paper.

January Pig Iron Output
The output of pig Iron In January,
amounting to 3,188,8 11 tons, according tn
tho Iron Ago figures, was only 14,178 loss
tlinu In the record production month of
last December. The decline Is attributed
partly to the recent strike at Youngstown
plants, where it reduction of 45,000 tons
in last month's output from December
was not quite equalled by tho January
output of new furnaces blown in else
