SUPPLY OF STOCKS EXHAUSTED;
.. BROKERS WERE BUSY IN WAR ISSUES
.Vfrpward Movement Started When Buying Orders Ap
'.'" peared Through Conservative Houses Greatest
f.v Gain Made by Willys Overland
NISW VOKK. Fob. 2.
,, Today's nctunl stock mnrkct dirt not develop until nrouiirt midday. Prior to
Jhat ttrno there h.ltl been a llttlo fecllnpr of the situation by some of tlio room
trader's who were disposed to regard yesterday's strenstb ns simply a halt In
(liquidation, to bo followed by renewed supply at t'onrosalons, but after some
J)t these traders had sold stocks nt concessions and belated liquidation of
Speculative holdings occurred, It was demonstrated that the supply of stocks
Jjad been exhausted on the declines In the last two weeks, which apparently
culminated on Monday,
Tho favorable rnllroad earnings, divided Increases and Industrial outlook
proved to have exerted a broader Influence than Wall street seemed to com-
jprehend. When buying orders appeared through sotno of tho conservative
cbmmisslo-n houses an upward movement started which gained In force In tho
late afternoon. The range of tho market was Indicated to a great extent by
tho advance In United States Steel common from SITa to 83?i, and this advance
jvAs followed by proportionate gains In such stocks as Anaconda, Krlc, South
;ii Pacific and Reading.
Brokers noting for bonking Interests wero busy all through tho day In
war order stocks and there was aggressive buying of those Issues at frequent
Intervals. The greatest gain was made In Wlllys-Ovorlond. which roso over
11 points, crossing 21C. Crucible Steel ranged from 7I& to 7-1, Texas Com
pany from 1D6V4 to 200 and Studcbakcr from 143 to 118, while Industlral
Alcohol, after selling at 1C5, dropped to 1G3H. Many of these stocks aio steadily
going: out of Wall street and as tho capitalization of theso companies Is small
current trading necessarily consists to a great extent of switching of contracts.
