ono of tho biggest of tho season, nnd
was mado espcelnlly notublo by tho
entertainment provided for tho one
thousand guests. In tho way of dco
oratlvo schemes tho floral display was
psrfcctly gorgeous. Of course. Lisa Is
ono of tho most popular girls of her
year, and we woro not surprised to find
oursolvcs walking through avenues
of orchids and baby primroses, charm
ing tributes to her popularity. Thero
was ono perfectly stunning thing In
flowers, tho loveliest oir.nlds and for-gct-mc-nots,
winding their way
through latticed columns, and at tho
top massed with pink roses and tied
with innumerable strands of silvered
ribbons.
Mrs. nlddle. In mauvo brocade and
pearls, received tho guests, and was
assisted by Mrs?. Norrls, who was
charmingly gowned In black jet nnd
tullo, Lisa was the very spirit of
youth In her diaphanous tullo frock,
with Just a glint of silver hero and

bouquet of pink rosos which she car

Tho restaurant was Inclosed with
myriad palms and ferns, and piovldcd
joats for the guests on ono sldo only,
the other sldo being given over to n
buftet-liko tablH, U In shape, from
which supper was continually,, served.
Smllax was wicathed about tho table,
encircling the tall silver vases which
held a colorful array of spring (lowers.
The dancing was held In the ballroom
downstairs, nnd in addition to tho Jtltz
orchestra tho band from the Crystal
JRoom In New York played tho last
whisper in foxtrots nnd onestcps, In
tho Junior ballroom supper was served
from a long buffet table; four lingo
silver vases, quite, three feet In height,
wcro filled with -pink roses, affording
tho necessary tones of contrast, for
everything else was green.
Tho speeiul delight of tho evening
was the Neapol.ian Band In costume,
which trummed away merrily during
tho evening, interspersed with songs
nnd dances. Charming littlo songs
were sung by one of the women dressed
ns Santuzza. Aftpr midnight a negro
' band mado its appearance, nnd sang
and played tunefully until morning.
Of courso every ono was thero.
Before tho ball tho smartest littlo

"BALLET OF ORLANDO" TO BE
BRILLIANT SOCIAL FUNCTION
Unique and Original Performance to Be Given by Mem
bers of Junior League for the Benefit
of War Sufferers
THE Junlpr Leaguo n III present Its
original pantomime, "Tho Ballet of
Orlando," this nfternoon and tonight In
tho ballroom of the Bellevue-Stratford
for tho benefit of tho war sufferers.
The leaguo Is a national organization
for -S'ounrf girls who, having completed
their debutante winter, are anxious to
interest themselves In somo work of soclul
service, such as hospitals, settlements,
factories and organized charities. There
are branches In most of the big cities of
tho United States. There Is nlso a Cana
dian League, nnd even one In Holland.
Tho Philadelphia chapter thinks very
well of Itself, and Is BUre that It baa
every capacity for making tho entertain
ment today a really artlstlo and beautiful
affair. Tho leaguo girls are not In the
least modest about It; In fact. It Is usu
ally referred to ns "the greatest show on
earth." Barnum & Bailey's not ex
cepted. Tho girls are doing every Inch
ot It themselves, from tho making of the
costumes to the designing and actual
painting of the scenery. "Just because
wo won't trust any one else," as they
proudly say.
"The Ballet of Orlando" Is laid In four
teenth century Italy, and tho costumes
aro adapted from certain of the early
Italian artists, such as Plsanello, Flor
enzo dl Lorenzo and Benozzo aozzoll.
Tho scenery, on tho other hand, Is all
that Is most modern, and shoiva the In
fluence of Leon Bakst's sumptuous and
fantastic designs for stage settings.
The plot is unrolled in pantomime by
such talented yqung women as Miss Ade
llno Popper, Miss Mary Mitchell, Miss
Susan B. Ingersoll, Miss Eulalle WII14
cox, Miss Eliza Fox, Miss Hurrlet Fra
zler and many others, who will daunt
lessly array themselves In the most fan
tastlo costumes ever paraded before our
conservative Philadelphia public. The
Identity of Orlando, tho hero of the occa
sion, ta., surrounded by all the glamour
of mystery. So far no one can be induced
to betray his Identity, but there Is some
rumor that the part Is to bo. taken by
one ot Philadelphia's most beautiful and
charming young matrons, who has lately
devoted much of her time to art.
The dances are one and all things of
beauty, and their qualntness and orig
inality are most delightful. Miss George
anna Brown makes the most, charming
"premiere danseuse" that can be Imag
ined, and her training of the ballet Is
almost professional but then she has the
best of material In such dancers as Miss
Cornelia Leldy, Miss Helen Tower, Miss
Gertrude Tower, Miss Jean Thompson
and many others Just as good.
The "Ballet of Orlando" will include
some 50 actors and dancers, all member
of the league, with the exception of some
seven or eight kind roes wbo have dared
to te.ke.tlie ataseutlne roles. i
The ifiw is very proud of iU artistic

The French committee of the Emergency

nt 700 Arch street, and a moro nnlmnted
spot It would havo been hard to Itnd In
tho wholo of Philadelphia. There music
played from morning until night, while
Philadelphia belles practiced their steps
and tried on their costumes with exclama
tions ot delighted surprise. Yes. those
Italians certainly know how to make very
fetching costumes.
The Junior League girls havo a big Job
on their hands, but their self-conlldence
seems almost boundless. They assert that
ho one else could do It as well as they are
doing It, and they won't let any one else
even help them at It. At any rate, their
Ideas are clearly definedfrom the combi
nation of colors an a lady's bonnet to tho
moro dlincult harmonies of the scenery
and music. t
